I might have to say right now that Band Of Gypsies is my favorite but that is really a tough question since they are all so different and absolutely earth shattering!

You should have done this as a poll. It would be interesting to see if there was any kind of consensus. I bet it would be pretty mixed with all receiving a good many votes. Pretty impressive that EVERY album he made could legitimately be considered his "best".

Really dig Axis.
But have been listening to Band of Gypsies a lot lately - for the first time in about 25 years (no lie).
IMHO, BOG has a certain groove and soul that goes much deeper than Jimi's studio stuff or playing with Experience. The first 57 seconds of Who Knows is killin' - Buddy and Billy provide such a great platform for Jimi's playing. When the bass and drums kick in, it's a "holy cr@p" moment for me.
I liked Mitch's drumming overall. But there is something about Buddy's and Billy's playing that simply go places Experience never went for me. Again, just my $0.02.

I believe Hendrix only released 4 albums in his lifetime:
Are You Experienced, Axis Bold As Love, Electric Ladyland and Band Of Gypsies (which was to settle a legal conflict.)
They are all amazing on so many levels, the man was insanely talented!

That's like asking which is your favorite testicle. I have multiple copies of each record released in his lifetime and Cry of Love/First Rays. The one I play most for people with low Hendrix awareness (yes, they exist) is Electric Ladyland. I do love the Axis cover the best. I've got the poster and the T-shirt.

I like his concert recordings. Bootlegs. My faves are: Baltimore 6/13/70, Boston 6/27/70, Norman, OK 5/8/70, Seattle, 7/26/70, Gothenberg 9/1/70, Copenhagen 9/3/70, San Jose, 5/25/69, San Diego 5/26/69. Jimi did his best playing in that spring - summer 70 tour. If you can stand some crackly tape and hiss you'll hear some amazing playing.

Michael Fairchild has written some interesting stuff about Jimi's live gigs. It really was a prehistoric era as far as live sound reinforcement and music technology.
Studio Lp's? EL, he was really stretching on that one.

Yeah, cool cover. Jimi didn't like it though. He had asked for it to represent his Indian heritage and being in England they thought that he meant Indian Indian and not American Indian.

Loose Ends is awesome, one of my favorites. I remember grabbing that on vinyl close to 30 years ago and just being blown away by the tone and off the cuff funkiness of it all. "Where's that grass, where's that god@#$# grass!"
I believe I also heard more from those sessions several years back on the net.

Electric Lady Land is certainly amazing, and I listened a thousand times when it came out ~ But that New Years Eve recording of Band of Gypsies was spot on. Just an incredible vibe, raw, no studio embellishments.

Like the guitar work in 'Night Bird Flying' quite a lot.
Sounds more like 50/60 watt Bassman heads on the that album than Marshalls to me.
I don't know off-hand which album(s) have 'Purple Haze' and 'Foxy lady', but I've heard those tunes just too many times. Need to wait 20 years before I can handle "re-discovering" them.

That performance is a lot of fun, but those guys are really far removed from what Hendrix was doing. That live Red House from In the West (San Diego Sports Arena) is arguably the best thing Hendrix ever did live. For me, it's between that and the live Hear My Train A Comin' from Berkeley.
Both of these are marked by Hendrix in this sort of trance-like flow, ideas and sound just pouring out of him.

Are You Experienced... where it all began.
The first time I heard it was when an older cousin played it for me. We were down in his basement, and he had smuggled some beer down. He said "You have to hear this album!" I was floored by what I heard... and that experience looms large in why I play guitar.

If it was like a desert island "you only get to bring one Hendrix" I would be hard pressed. Whatever I took I would need to hear another also...I need the whole library of his stuff.
But even though it would be cruel and unusual to make me pick one, I think probably it would be "Band of Gypsys"... I love all his stuff, but I love the live stuff best when it was really cooking.

band of gypsies
I tend to generally (with regards to rock music) prefer raw but tight stuff and this instance is no exception. There is something really great about how 'fresh' and enthusiastic the band performs. I've always assumed the band was giddy in just playing with each other and free of drama. Maybe things were really just starting to fully click, I wouldn't know but that is what the mood the band seems to have here. That's what I mean by 'fresh' yet tight. I may be wrong but this is one of those recorded moments where a unique brand of magic happens the raw enthusiasm meets familiarity. Most bands go through this phase only once as far as I can tell, unless they change styles or lineups and material.
(woah, sorry about that ramble..I decided just to post it without editing. Pure stream of conciousness. srsly :) )

I love 'em all and still hear something new every time I listen to any of them after 40+ years now.If I have to make a choice,it's "Are You Experienced" because of it's raw kinetic energy and above all the impact it had on everything in my world.I remember where I was. What I was doing. What the day was like before and after I heard Purple Haze on my transistor pocket radio.
