On this board. Saw a couple of Youtube performance videos and could tell he could a play.

Bought this CD to get to "know" his music and it put me to sleep.

I played it in the car on a couple of hour drive (good system in my car) and my college age kids asked my to turn it off, said it was worse than W Hotel music, Gen X elevator music. They are both performers, my son studies and peforms opera and arranges for and performs in an a cappella group, my daughter acts, sings and studies dance at the university level and have impeccable/ecclectic taste in music that is much broader than mine. Dig rock and jazz that I like but are deep into classical, opera, ballet, Broadway...stuff that I would turn the station on. Had to agree with them.

Not trying to be a putz, but this was one of the most dissappointing musical recordings I have ever purchased. Inane songwriting to drum machine simple rhythms...started nowhere and went nowhere with nothing in the middle, not even good riffing?

Saw a recent Youtube with this guy on slide, pretty lame...kinda funny, a couple a guys thought his slide playing was good. Different strokes. But be warned, at best it's an aquired taste. Try before you buy.

Big fan, though "Eudemonic" is somewhat of a disappointment, to me. The studio versions suffer in comparison to the live performances of that material I witnessed. I miss that band.

I like certain tunes on the album. I also like the drummer a lot.

That guy is out there making a living playing guitar and doing interesting things; definitely has my admiration and respect.

I think most of my favorite albums by great guitarists are live; I think the the guitar generally sounds better. I wish I'd hear more of it.

What a great venue! Intimate, classy, and full of rock history! Oh yeah, and live music most every night of the week. With a strip club almost next door! What's not to like!?

Hmm...looked around last night, and couldn't find my copy. I think it may have been stuck in the closet somewhere. Along with that three dimensional blackboard I can never seem to find. ;)
Haven't listened to it for a while, but I really like that version of Bronx Experiment. It's a good cd, and playing it through even just a decent stereo, rather than an iPod, to where you can get some air moving around, makes a big difference. Hey, for being recorded in an old barn, it sounds pretty darn good!

Oh, and yes, I agree on the Great American Music Hall. I believe I have seen Steve play there....gosh, at least 20 times by now! Always a blast, and have never had any hassles at all. A few years back they got a Meyer's p.a. system, and I have never been happier! I wish Umphrey's McGee could go back to playing there. I would really like to see them in a smaller room. Especially after catching that Slim's show a couple of weeks ago.

Yeah. You know, it's one thing to say you don't dig something, tastes vary. But it's quite another to do it with the air of superiority (such as it is) and smugness. Amazing thing was that he wasn't even trying to be a putz.

That's not what I got from that post. He stated that he's got some background, knows music and the recording didn't do it for him, after listening multiple times. Personally I think that's OK .

I guess I felt he did a little more than that. As I mentioned earlier, he didn't like the record, that's cool. I did found the comment on slide playing--the part where he says that he found it kind of funny that others thought it was good--to be pretty condescending. And fairly surprising, really. I've played w Kimock a whole bunch of times over the years, and maybe I have tin ears, but I think the guy is a phenomenal slide player (not that anyone with a professional legacy like Kimock needs any defending). And, well, although my pedigree isn't world-class, it's not bad, either, if we want to play that game.

I like the Cd, but his live video at Gothic really lets him shine.

Now this may sound condescending, but he plays on a level not everyone can understand--and it can be offputting. His intonation is similiar to that of a raga singer, imo, which can be hard to digest for some.

He's a very unique player, with a very unique approach and understanding.

I'm not gonna argue preferences wit any one, but calling his slide playing lame puzzles me. To me Kimock's intonation is so amazing I could listen to him play one note. As for the drums, I actually think the drumming on that CD is what's the word...perfect. And since we seem to have to throw around our CV to have a discussion...I just worked with Dave Weckl and Marco Minnemann on drums.

FWIW, a few years back I sat in when Kimock's ban played here, and I took a few muso friends, not one of them had known who Stveve was prior. But all of them enjoyed his band and particularly Steve, immensly.

...once, my grumpy bulldog asked me to take off my Lesley Gore album...I was in a "girl group" phase...plus it was my birthday...I told him to go lick his balls...oh, did I mention my bulldog sings opera and has a Ph.D in Ethnomusicology from Princeton?

...I then didn't type about it here on tgp...or did I?

That site is pretty amazing. It's really fun to navigate and find cool random shows to listen to. A friend of mine puts shows up there for bands he tapes so we don't even have to d/l or burn CD's...it just streams for free. Great soundquality considering the price. :)

I've been a Kimock fan since the '70's when he was in a local funk/jazz/blues band called the Mix. I was a hack guitar player but I knew talent when I saw it. Our paths have crossed many, many times over the years.

Steve lives, eats and breathes the guitar and music. HE has become a real master. IT's not speed, although he can play as fast as necessary, it's the choices he makes, especially live. His intonation is amazing and his phrasing is unique and immediately recongnizable. Kind of like Frank Sinatra :D

Eudemonic is a sleepy, very melodic recording. My favorite of Steve's band's various incarnations was KVHW. I knew Alan Hertz when he was a baby (I'm friends with his father who was also a musician), and he was a little toe head running around pouding on anything he could with his drum sticks. Everyone knew he was going to be a percusionist.

It's an amazing thing to be on TGP where Kimock frequently posts. I can't say that I understand everything that he writes, but I take his advice about what to read and study. I've also learned to appreciate my own voice on guitar and not try to mimic anyone.

Steve is tops in my book.

If you are into more a more simple 'primal rock' format and want to hear what Steve sounds like sitting in with a band completely improvising (for an entire show none the less) listen to this....

http://www.archive.org/details/jjj2001-08-26.matrix.flac.16

#6 - my little tiger: kind of a dirty jerry garcia with a hint of pissed off gram parsons ;) (if anyone wants to guess on the signal chain here i'd love to hear your theories)

Also features John Bell of widespread panic on some good tracks as well. I believe Jerry J and Steve were in a band briefly called little women but i'm not sure. So there are two guitarists but I think it's pretty easy to pick them out. JJ's tone is more thin and pointy, while kimock sounds round and full.

I really dug Reed's presence in the last incarnation and hoped to see him develop further in the band.

Love this show. When KVHW finally disintegrated in December 1999. Alan Hertz put together 2 shows with Steve, Bobby Vega, Terry Haggerty and a percussionist. Listen to some incredible covers...My Favorite Things and footprints to name two.

Two nights later they took to the stage again; this time with some special guests (Ike Willis and Kai Eckhardt)

Reed is a busy boy these days, splitting his time between three touring bands. I know he would love to work with Steve again.
