Kid Andersen of The Nightcats has heard good things and is interested in checking out some of Bill's work. Above are the five I'll be taking to his house - 3 Hawks and 2 'Houlas.

This one is out on loan at the moment, happy it's being played out, but I am starting to miss it!

Can you put Hank up again, Dave?

What's the new switch and electronics do? thanks

Bill would be best to fully describe it, But I went from stock 5 way strat switching to now having 10 different very usable tones. Its now a 3 way switch with two push pulls on the tone knobs which are now a master tone and a bridge tone control. It allows for all the classic strat tones, tele tones and some tones that are new and unique. Also series bucker type tones are available. Its really cool.

You know what, I can't deal with all that. Even a simple push pull gets me all facokta (sp??). When I got my 2 Rock I was half out of my mind because of a single box with three buttons. Give me my 3 way, volume and tone. I can even go as far out as 2 vol and 2 tones but that is it.

Hang in their JB. Do you know where you are in the process?

Need to make it clear - I lent Craig my guitar - that's not me playing/singing in the video. Fun show, great music, nice tones all around, and some really sweet guys in the band. Jeff Pevar is an insanely good player - wish we'd been able to get a TBird into his hands...

A big fat CONGRATULATIONS to our Mr. Bill for his 2-page spread on the Fatline TV, 1994 in "Hand Made, Hand Played: The Art & Craft of Contemporary Guitars" by Robert Shaw. The book basically has 1 or 2 pages of photos for each guitar and a description. It's got acoustics, electrics, basses. It's like a big, high-end catalog (although I don't understand the inclusion of First Act).

depends what your defintion of horizon is. I've got a Blackmore-A- Houla coming, though i didn't realize it when i ordered it . It was sort of inspired by my own adventures with Duosonics, 1981 Fender Bullets, a happy axecident i had with an in series, out of phase tele i put together, and a story by Robbie Robertson on how he modded his strats .
The Black Houla? The Black Hole? The Tele-houla?

I've got a Hybrid Hollow Hawk with 90s of some sort on a short scale. Spanish Cedar body with Red Cedar Top, Mahogany Neck with Blackwood board with a Hipshot baby grand bridge coming sometime soon I hope. With a warn burst finish we found on an old rebiccke Red Cedar topped guitar. It was incredible. I am hoping for the same

I'm VERY happy with my updated Bloomfield tribute T. - Bill turned the pup selector/vol/tone controls around for me, and spec'd a Don Mare strat style pup in the neck, based on what I was describing I wanted. Nailed it, of course!

Here it is next to a real '67. I like the Bloomy better.

I just drooled on my guitar! :o

I sent my old normal not-very-glamourous (I did NOT say boring) candy apple red TBird up to Bill for a rework on the wiring. And Oh My God!

It's pretty close to a normal T-style 'normally', except for the Don Mare Stelly neck pup. But when you goose it, it goes from total sweetheart to absolute bitch - it's really vocal, but with a majorly snotty attitude. Albert Collins shoulda used this guitar for his "conversation" songs - it sounds like a talkbox when you work it.

So major props to Bill for being the master of the happy accident - a mis-matched wiring layout from a vendor, a sound that most people would have reacted to as "wrong" and rewired immediately, but Bill heard it and ran with it to give me a guitar with a voice like none I have ever heard on another guitar. Traditional, Tele-like, but altogether corrupt and evil - in a good way. :)

So I just got done plugging it into the Swirling Mohel-o-verb and I was going sound to sound (10 distinct ones that I've found, but with really easy control over them), and realized that I had just drooled on it while I was listening to the bad things it was telling me to do. Its voice has told the usual voices in my head to STFU, and they're afraid to mess with it!

So we have a new #1 Alpha Dog guitar in the house. :)

Clips soon, I think.

decay-o-caster
11-10-2008, 03:58 PM
And as threatened - a clip (http://tempusfugitives.articulateimages.com/GearClips/FonkRawkRedTBird20081110.mp3) of some of the voices Bill was able to sneak into the guitar. I was really trying to show how vocal the guitar is - the quacky part is a little extreme, but fun.

All parts are guitar straight into the four-6V6 Mohel-o-verb - no pedals, a little compression added in the software.

trisonic
11-10-2008, 04:32 PM
Like it! Sounds like one of my SG's!

Tell me more about the Mohel - o - verb? Isn't a Mohel one of those guys with the sharp knives aiming at your nether regions?????

Best, Pete.

decay-o-caster
11-10-2008, 05:57 PM
The Mohel-o-verb is my name for a double-top-secret, I'd-tell-you-but-then-I'd-have-to-kill-you, doesn't-really-exist, prototype amp I've been privileged to acquire. Four 6V6s, firmly in the D* camp, but not a clone. Snarly / spitty / nasty goodness, in a smooth and creamy way.

I wondered if anyone would figure out where the name came from! :)

I was down at the crossroads today and had a chance meeting with blues veteran Blind Whitebread Kelly! Coaxed him back to the crib to use my restroom and got him to lay down some grease with a Chapin fretless. He didn't know it, but I had the recorder going and now I'm-a-gonna make tens of dollars off this track:

decay-o-caster
11-25-2008, 03:48 PM
I have - the fretless in the clip Mike posted comes to mind - but his output has suffered pretty tremendously in the time he's been buried in getting-his-life-back-together issues since the explosion. Keeping his family whole while dealing with the schmucks who blew up his house and their lawyers has certainly taken a toll. But he's finally moved back into his rebuilt house, so with luck, the Chapin faucet will start opening up.

I know he's getting excited about some stuff he's working on.

Burled maple on mahogany body (burst);
Rosewood on mahogany 24.625" bolt neck;
2 unobtaneum Holmes pickups (sorta PAFs in Gretsch form) from Bill's stash that he didn't want to sell me;
Barely over 6 pounds - after the Chiro-caster, that matters! :)

Ok, presenting the Rustic Hybrid Fatline (unless Bill comes up with another name). Cedar top with rosewood pickguard, ash (from the big kaboom) body, rosewood back, mahogany neck (tinted to match the cedar), bw fretboard, chambered. It's got almost no finish on it - the body feels as natural and slick as the neck but is susceptible to dings. The finish drove Bill nuts. 2 Lollar mini-humbuckers (Bill called them mini's but Jason's site has them as Firebirds) and a Lollar P-90 and a Skyway. Looks-wise, especially with the rosewood back, this thing is outta the park. Sounds-wise, it can't be pinned down other than to say it's very, very acoustic and airy. Through the Alessandro Black 'n Tan with KT66s, there are a lot of strat sounds only fatter. Through the Gries 5 with 6V6s, it sounds less stratty, more acoustic - it sounds like a completely different guitar. It's got a 5-way selector and a push-pull tone control and, being a Chapin, has a lot of sonic options & they're all great. I'm a little thrown off because I was expecting a sound more like the Johnny Smith clips on the Lollar site. But I think it's exactly what I asked for. I'll need to compare it to my other Chapins and see where it sits in the mix. It came with GHS Burnished Nickels but I prefer the SOBs. The rosewood back is darker than the picture shows. And, of course, the workmanship is stellar.

Gibson Firebirds used mini-hums (as did my '71 LP Deluxe, others), so i reckon Bill is using a generic term & Jason a product name

since the sonix are so different between amps, i'll betcha the Lollar clip sounds are in there with a little twist here & there

Awesome!! That back is killer with no control cavities because of the tele plate and skyway.

Thanks, guys. Guitarzan: yeah, no plates in the back, how great is that? The more time I spend with the Fatline, the more I "get" it. I spent last night comparing it to my Hawk, mahogany 'Houla, and Collings I-35 but realized everyone needed fresh strings in order to make the comparison useful.

And it's clear without being wimpy and sustains like crazy. Ok, the guitarist had a little something to do with it too ...

so, i stopped by the Chapins' last Wednesday on my drive home from Oregon. All appear to be doing well. the new/old house looks pretty much the same as the original. Liz gifted me with her first attempt at pickles - tasty as all git-out. Spencer is getting big & tall & headed for kindergarten and a swimming program. at the moment Bill was working on the bracing for an Eagle and there were quite a few projects in various stages of completion.

Mostly we went over my 'houla (#1) and the Devil Dog. Bill doesn't get much chance to play out, just a couple hours Sunday evenings, but he's definitely got the touch and demo'd both guitars. & we talked about near-term madness with insurance companies & the legal system &c., about which i'll spare my opinions (:FM:tapedshut:horse). there will be significant dates in the resolution/mediation process in a couple weeks, then November, then possibly December ("how long, o Lord"...), and then there may finally be an end to it.

i was particularly taken with the body & neck of a slab-top Hawk, that'll be headed my way sometime. body is mahogany w/cedar top, heritage red, black binding. p'ups will be TV Jones Magenetrons w/a Mare single-coil in between. 5-way switching will yield many & mighty options.

's'all for now,

So I am trading my Tbird back to Bill plus some cash for a new Houla thats a little more me these days. Basically a 57 strat 2-tone burst with left handed trem and med V neck. I am still getting a vintage piece but I couldnt resist the temptation of a new Houla. Should get it next summer, at least I still have my number one Tbird. Alright it, I don't have the build sheet but it is an order. Ash body with Mary Kaye finish gold hardware tortoise shell guard. Super switching, single coils that are Bill choice. Maple neck rosewood board with dots and shades(I think). It is a tremolo bridge.

I had a conversation with Bill at the beginning so some details were worked out there. I'm a bit nervous, I have had Saul build me guitars that are awesome and Suhr build me a great one and one I over ordered(kitchen sink and everything) that I couldn't bond with. So I wait.

Just kidding, of course. Glad to see your GAS came back. I was a bit worried at our last jam at DJ's, and you had a partsquire. What, no Koll, or Chapin? BTW, I just love that Jr. Glide, as well as your current Chapin. Suggest the colour to be Darkburst (with the dark cherry).

Best, Pete.

Im looking through lester galleries now. Bill is going to use a choice top that he already has. I still have to figure out what other appointments but so far its gonna be a rosewood board, mahogany back, maple top, pickups will be at Bills discretion but have the super wiring, non locking tuners and I think I am going to go for Les Paul Switching as far as placement. Lots of things will change as they always do with me and Bill but I am super excited and for the ones that havent gotten one yet this would be the time to do it...:aok

while a-waitin' on my next one and after plinkin' on DK's new esquirey beauty, i've been dreaming up something special, which i will dub the Sisyphus-o-caster (kinduva luthier's nightmare spec:Devil)

- double neck
- all African blackwood
- 'cept for spanish cedar fretboard
- 3 lipstick pickups in one neck
- 3 Chapin B-90s in the other
- both bodies chambered

yeahman :aok

went & heard Tim V. (http://timvolpicella.com) Sat. night (guitar, tenor sax, bass, drums quartet) and as always listened carefully over a bottle of Old Engine Oil (great Scottish beer).

and at one point it occurred to me that the sound he was getting was indistiguishable from a Super 400 through a Polytone or something. he was using his TV signature Chapin Fatline (http://chapinguitars.com/model_Fatline_large.html) through a Lone Star Special

(note: it's undergone substantial pickup changes since pic was posted)

Been playing the ass off "Patrick" (Daphne Blue/Mahogany/Korina/Braz Rswd/ 'Houla). It's set up like a "better" Clapton model but I'm wondering whether to convert it to passive......
"Hank" needs some Chapin TLC - when the weather's better (my excuse) it will go back to it's creator......
Nothing in the works right now, tho' I fancy a Page type Tele thing!

Best, Pete.

Ah I love to have a Chapin some time just to try but ... the John Page P-1 I have is amazing. If you want to try it out sometime Trisonic just pm me. I'm guessing we're within reasonable distance of each other.

been awful busy since last post, but here's a quick update:

Bill & Spencer stopped by on their way home from NAMM, both looking fine & healthy. one evening we had Bill, Mike Roberto (http://www.tonegurus.com), Tim Volpicella (http://www.timvolpicella.com), David Kelly (http://www.articulateimages.com) all jamming here in the Fortress of Sillitude. so i held down the bass.

last weekend Wing Loo received his updated Rawk Hawk (cherry burst w/Van Zandt & Wolfe 'buckers), shipped here. since we all jam here Sat. p.m.s, it was passed around among Tim V., DK, and me (Wing plays bass, too) and we all pronounced it very fine indeed.

this week i'm told i'll get David's twin to the SlideBeast (only fretted) and i'll get something special, many moons in the making. will post updates as occurrences, uh, occur...

hoping all y'all doing swell!

something Bill wrote on my Facebook Wall:

Chapin Guitars Just shipped out two very different but stunningly cool Fatline Hawks today...one I call "Desert Floor Diablo" (a companion piece to a fretless I built for the same customer) and "The Red Menace" which is what you get when you take the snarliest and growliest aspects of Vintage Strats, Teles, Gretsches, SGs and 3......35s [sic], and breed them with a flat top acoustic.

was expecting for tomorrow, but USPS tracking sez they're in San Jose as of this a.m. :aok

the DFD is d-o-c's & the RM is mine...

...all mine, i tells yas :drool

"... snarliest and growliest ... and breed them with a flat top acoustic". I don't know who Chapin is fooling. This simply can't be done ... Nor should it be done ... Seriously, I thought of the Fatline as a mellower, jazzier guitar. So how does snarly fit in with that?

Oh and: Spencer was at NAMM? Was anything left intact?

it's like the nuns used ta tell me all the time:

it's a mystery ...

guits have arrived. am vetting the Red Menace now, plan on starting a thread & cross-posting here

as the nuns used ta say:

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!

(they were Irish)

reminds me it's the Feast of St. Joseph...good times in the Greater San Jose' Metroplex
