View Full Version : Competition comparison demos?

I have in my posession a couple of amps that could be considered as comparable to my debut model, the 22 Tango.

I've been toying with the idea of doing a demo video comparing my model to these other makes to give people a frame of reference with a new product that not many have had a chance to play and comment on.

It would be a fair comparison, not a "make theirs sound crappy and make mine sound good" thing.

It's just not clear to me if this is considered taboo. I don't *think* it's illegal in any way as long as I don't misrepresent anything.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.

Thanks,

Paul

I think it would be a great way to compare your amp, and IMO, it is no different than doing a couple different videos of the various amps and having people listen.

Looking forward to it! :)

Thanks for the sanity check!

I'm planning on doing a video with mine and a Divided by 13 JRT 9/15 and possibly also a Matchless Lightning.

And to be neutral in terms of cabinet selection, I'll use a Dr. Z Z-Best for both.

IMO, it would be bad form. Better to let a 3rd party perform the demo.

I think it would be a monumentally bad idea. No good can come of it. Just do demos of your amps and make them sound as good as you can. Leave comparisons to others.

Yea, leave that one to someone without an interest in any company represented. Thats my $.02.

Although I`m sure you will present all the amps fairly, people will assume you have portrayed the "competition" in an unfavourable light. People make a lot of assumptions when considering gear.

I sort of thought that might be the case.

It's a big ole issue of the chicken or the egg. Oh well.

The idea came from the fact that I referenced my Lightning when developing the 22 Tango and it, in most ways, out-performs the Lightning, though it's turned out to be a very different amp.

I also had two of these amps at an outdoor performance Friday. My other guitar player had a Carr Rambler and a /13 JRT 9/15 with him. We had the Rambler on stage with us, and he played one of my 22 Tangos, and he noted that the Nolatone was "every bit as good" as the /13.

BTW, the 22 Tango I was playing was a prototype unit which thanks to repetitive soldering, one of the preamp tube sockets is flaky causing intermittent problems. So, I played the Rambler for part of the set. I've owned a Rambler in the past, and did and still do consider it a great amp, though the 22 Tango is more dynamic and responsive, hence, for me, more fun!

So, we're talking about some pretty fantastic amps and I want the world to be aware the 22 Tango is in that same class (except considerably less expensive!)

Since I'm not spending money on marketing right now, I guess it will just take time.

I'm thinking of offering a program for TGP members where I ship a demo unit and if the person likes it, I offer a discount on purchase.

Anyhow, luckily I'm under no pressure, so it's all good.

Not sure if you're busting my b@lls or not but I'd be happy to do a demo for you.

A little bit maybe :-)

Let's chat about it off line.
