I bought a supposed Trinity 18w plexi head. The person converted it from 6V6's to 6L6's and updated some of the resistors he says were out of spec. I brought the amp in to a shop and they claim it has EL34's in it. Now the trannies were not changed and it's still running a 5Y3 for the rectifier tube.

Here is the post with pics from another forum:

Here are pics after the changes, see post :

I want to convert back to 6v6's.

Sounds like you are trying to get a bunch of opinions.
You can use 6V6's in this amp as is,if you keep in mind one thing:the reflected impedance changes from EL34/6L6 types to 6V6's.
The larger power tubes want about 4k and the 6V6's like to see from 6.6k to 8k,so you need to switch the output ohms to use 6V6's.
So if you are using the 8 ohm tap now, switch to the 4 ohm tap.

So I can leave the 6l6's in there if that's what they are and they will work fine with a 5Y3 rectifier? If that's the case I will leave it alone. I was told if the trannies were designed for 6V6's that the 6l6 would burn them up.

First thing to realize is that is one awesome looking amp!
Few amps are that neat and clean on the inside!!!

The transformers do look a bit small for a pair of 6L6's, but there's only three preamp tubes, so it might be OK. It's hard to tell with old transformers.

phsyconoodler is correct about the impedance difference between 6V6 and 6L6 tubes.

I'd recommend finding out more info about those transformers. I'd call the original owner and ask. It's also possible to look up the numbers stamped on them, but that's harder than talking. The other option is to measure the voltages and calculate the impedance ratios, but that may require long division.

Thanks PRNDL (http://www.thegearpage.net/board/member.php?u=28797) I'm not sure the original owner knows. I will try looking up the numbers on them. I may have to bring it to my tech. He's just a really busy guy. The amp sounds really good and I like it a lot. The only reason I'm concerned is it was making a ton of noise and I just don't want to blow it up.

I'll report back if I get more info on the Transformers. Maybe I can just send it to Trace @ Voodoo Amps and get him to look it over and make it right. I would like to get some Mercury Magnetics trannies in it and have it tuned up to last awhile.

Depending on where you are I'd consider taking it to Eugene in Utica. He does my work and personally trust his work over others. If you want his number PM me.

Clothwiring Thanks but I'm near Poughkeepsie and thats @ least 2.5 hours from me. There is a great tech in town but he is swamped.
