Use a metrenome. The key to improving your playing is START SLOOOW!!!
Set it at about 45bpm. The key is accuracy. Speed is a by product.
Need any tips let me know.

What is a good metronome to buy? I have a Boss Tu-80 but I cant use my amp with it. I cant hear the clicks. I have tried to hook it up in a chain (guitar, met, amp) but it doesnt work like that.
Thanks!

What I do is play the guitar through a firebox on my CPU.
This way you can hear the met.
The Boss is fine.
When you practice do it dry. No reverb and no dist. You want to hear every note crystal clear.

Its a good idéa to play medium loud dirty through an amp too to get the dynamics down

I can relate to what he says about taking a lick to a speed beyond your
ability and then work on cleaning it up.
I've never been able to do gradual speed increases to get to a
desired tempo. I get bored. I learn something slow and then
take it to tempo and work on cleaning it up. I might have to drop
tempo occasionally to convince myself that I can still play it right
but then I go back to sorting out the slop.

I play mostly with a clean/dirty sound
and to me
The thing about slowing down is also a mental/musical thing
Not only you get very aware of the picking and the contact with the strings
but also the sound and the vibe
