I just want to check on something. In a cathode biased amp that normally takes 6V6's, can I substitute 6K6's and cut the power down a little?

Is this a safe thing to do? thanks
Jerry

In almost all cases, the answer is no.

Most amps designed for 6V6s will murder 6K6s in short order. They cannot handle the voltages that 6V6s can.

+1. Though amazingly, they do seem to hold up at least for a while.

I wouldn't try it though. They also run MUCH hotter, bias wise, than a 6V6 in a 6V6 circuit.

These seem to be popular in THD Univalves in low voltage mode.

Thanks guys, I won't go there.

Mike, long time no talk, hope all is well with you and yours.
