View Full Version : Downsizing to the Line 6 M13.
Here is my pedalboard ( a few pedals have been replaced with others, but otherwise, it's accurate).:

Here is what I plan to downsize to:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/dkleiner/Effects/DSC_0049.jpg
The additional pedals are an Xotics BB+, Timmy, Menatone King of the Britains, a Jangle Box and an A/B+Y box. My intended signal path is to come out of my Shure SLX wireless into the A/B+Y box. From there, one side will go through the compressor, then the various OD boxes and finally, into the M13. The other side of the A/B+Y box will go to a Bose L1 for my acoustic.
1. Any reason to use the effects loop?
2. Will a pedalboard hold the M13 with velcro? I currently have a Trailer Trash board, but it's pretty big. I thought I would downsize there as well and buy a Pedaltrain 2 (24" x 12").
3. Is the power supply for the M13 similar to other Line 6 modelers in that they work with a Pedal Power?
4. Any other thoughts on this intended conversion from a "purist" pedalboard to a digital/analog board?
All comments are welcome.

double bump! i think it's pretty awesome. i'd love to get the m13. honestly, i'm more jealous of the m13 than all the other pedals. i'm sure i'll get bashed by just about everyone here but i think it's awesome.

1. I use the loop to run some of the modulation or filter effects before my offboard drives.
2. Mine is velcro'd to my board, used a bunch and took off the little rubber feet.
3. Pedal power does not work if I recall correctly. I'm using the supplied adapter.
4. I love it. Very flexible with lots of usable tones.

Sit down, take a deep breath. Turn over the magazine ad. Breathe into a paper bag.
You have severe GAS. I'm not gonna talk you out of getting that, that... thing. So how about this:
I think you should have 2.
Keep your purist board you've worked so hard on.
Have the Line 6 for those times your feeling "frisky" and want a grab and go.
I think you will be very sorry if you don't.
Nice board, BTW.

Don't buy the m13 to replace your dirt...
DO buy it if you want incredible sounding, delays, reverbs, chorus , trems ( the trems are really swampy and buttery ), filters and weird synth sounds....
PS ( the color sound OD patch in the m13 is excellent ).....if it was in a small hand painted pedal box and had a waiting list, the cork sniffers would be lining up to buy it ;)
Maybe buy it somewhere you can return it, dont sell any of your current pedals until your sure what it can do....
But IMHO the m13 is the real deal and a vast improvement over previous line 6 offerings

1. Any reason to use the effects loop?
Which effects loop? On your amp? On the M13? I think the answer depends on what effects you are going to use from the M13. I am contemplating a similar setup, retaining my dirt boxes and replacing my MM4 and DL4 with the M13. The M13 can be set up with 4 cables so that some effects come before your amp's input and others are in your amp's effects loop. I'd set it up so that dirt boxes, filters, compressors etc... come before your amp's input and modulation and delay effects (inc. reverbs) go in the loop.
2. Will a pedalboard hold the M13 with velcro? I currently have a Trailer Trash board, but it's pretty big. I thought I would downsize there as well and buy a Pedaltrain 2 (24" x 12").
It's pretty heavy a far as a "pedal" goes, so velcro probably won't do the trick. You might try dual lock as it's a lot stronger and then the weak spot will be the glue on the dual lock. You may need to depend on foam in the lid of your board to hold the M13 in place during transportation.
3. Is the power supply for the M13 similar to other Line 6 modelers in that they work with a Pedal Power?
Not at this time. They're going to work with Voodoo to see if they can make something that will work in the future.
4. Any other thoughts on this intended conversion from a "purist" pedalboard to a digital/analog board?
I've been using the modeling pedals (MM4 and DL4) for years (as have many pros) and they work well for the most part, but have certain glitches that appear to be fixed, and improved, in the M13. I wish it was a little smaller, but it is much more intuitive than I expected. I haven't had the time to work with it enough to put on my board, but I will get there.
Well, all, I did it: I removed all of the pedals, mini ELC cables and the power lines from the board. It's so naked!
I temporarily set the pedals out and included my wah. I now only need one Pedal Power instead of two plus a One Spot. I'm going to experiment with the setup first by using patch cables above the board. Once I have it the way I want it, I'll take all of the wiring below board.
P.S. When I spoke of an effects loop, I was referring to the M13; most of the amps I use don't have effects loops.

For whoever asked about velcro. It will hold velcro but you'll have to remove all the rubber feet and then put the screws back in (to hold the thing together obviously). Even with the screws in on the bottom the M13 still holds firmly to my pedalboard with velcro.

If it helps any.. this is a PT2, and it's all held on by Velcro.
I've got a regular power-strip zip-tied to the bottom.

What is the actual power requirement from this sucker? According to the online manual, it says it uses a PX-2 power supply, which was designed to power their modeling pedals (ie. DL4, MM4, etc.) I own a Supa Charger with a dedicated 16v switchable output that is designed to power pedals like the DL-4...any chance this would translate over?
I'm also really interested in this pedal...I just don't have the funds at the moment...
I called Line 6 Tech Support, and you cannot use the power inputs on the PP2. Of course, you can plug the power supply into the courtesy AC outlet; that is what I am doing.

So I went on a spending spree Sunday --
Picked up the Egnater Rebel 20, the M13, and a "Clearance" Crate V212 Cab - it was $148. I know it ain't great, but it serves my purpose, anyways.
And just for kicks, I found an Epiphone Valve Jr. head and 1x12 cabinet used for $80 each. Why not?
In my trials, I like the Epiphone for it's simplicity. For the cost, it has a great sound.
The M13 is exactly what I expected - the best sounding box for the money. I love how easy it is to program, very short learning curve.

How much space will you earn?

I'm a college sophomore (24 years old -- dropped out to tour), living on campus, so I guess that gives me a 2nd place to put things. :-D
On stage, I'll gain quite a bit of space, as my old pedal board didn't do 25% of the things the M13 does, and I had more crap/power cables/instrument line running in and out of the board. Part of the mess is my wireless system which lives on my pedal board for the time being.
The more I play with these amps, the more liking I'm taking to the Epiphone. Now if I could get all of my patches on the M13 at the same volume, I'll be better than great.

One thing you might consider re: the M13's FX loop is putting at least a couple of your dirt pedals in the loop and assigning the loop to insert after the first (or first and second) vertical rows of M13 FX. I'm honestly liking the M13's dirt and even fuzz more as time passes (with lots of tweaking). It's not as if I even needed to like its onboard distortion, I just do. My favorites so far involve stacking an M13 boost, drive or compressor into my Screddy Screwdriver, then following up with a bit of modulation and/or delay.
Of course fuzzes need to see the guitar's input with nothing in between, so I keep them in front of everything.
