Reason is terrific. A few tips:
1. Its sound quality depends on your converters, but I find it doesn't "cut" as well as hardware. However, a little EQ solves that problem most of the time.
2. It's worth hooking MIDI gear up to it to control it. You don't NEED to, it will run on its own, but it's somewhat limited that way.
3. It doesn't need a blazing computer, but fast helps. The better your computer, the better it will run, and the more stuff you can load into it.
Hope this helps! I find it a fully professional tool.

How easy is it to program drum patterns, and string them together for songs? How do they sound?

I really like it - just finished a piece for a sales meeting using it. Did it entirely in the box and the clients were very happy.
Very easy to use, even for a non-MIDI/kbd guy like me. Took me about 2-3 hours to learn the basics and get going.

Reason is an amazing program. Fantastic bang for the buck. I'll admit the synths don't have quite the balls of my analog, but it is passable.
As for how hard it is to make songs, well, how hard is it to make a song with a programmable drum machine? Unlike hardware, everything is easily linked and sequenced on the program so that makes a difference. Plus, there are a lot refills out there. If you want something to quickly lay down some jam tracks you'll probably be disappointed. But if you like the concept of having a plethora of little GUI instruments that you can endlessly tweak you're in for a pleasant surprise.
And yes some of the instruments, especially those in the NN-XT are very high quality for a synthesizer.
