View Full Version : Kid Rock's new tune Question?

So he has written a new song that is also a sort of tribute to "Sweet Home Alabama", I get that.
But the verse section is ripped off from "Werewolves Of London". My question is, does anyone know if this was intentional? I have got to think that it was, and that he is paying Warren Zevo something? Anyone know?

I think he just recognized that the two songs had very similar chord structures, so he combined them.
I liked the song when I first heard it, but after about five airings I grew tired of it. Since it was a huge crossover hit, and got played on rock, pop and country stations, I think I've heard it 500,000 times!

Intentional, and I've read a recent interview where he talks about residuals for Skynyrd and the Zevon estate.

Yah, he splits the dough with the other two writing teams.

All parties are listed on the record as writers, they all get thier share. There is no way you could use that much content and get away with it otherwise.

the cover band i'm in is doing this song now, and at the end me and the other singer alternate lyrics of SHA and WOL - ONLY reason i agreed to do the song...

Is it just me, or is the guitar solo in a minor key and the song is in a major? I find the solo alone difficult to listen to.

Werewolves of London.
Good for him sharing the wealth.
I just hope nobody asks me to play this song.
Those chords are broke on all my guitars.

I take it the song is going over great with audiences. Is that affecting your desire to do the tune?
I thought you cover band guys were supposed to be above letting your own preferences impact your set lists. :hide

No, it is not the most well crafted solo I have heard. It bothers me every time I hear it. Of course it may be annoying to me because it sounds like something I would play.:RoCkIn

to me it sounds like he ripped off wherewolves of london, wrote new lyrics that are just a subtle rewording of Bob Segers "Night Moves", and added some "sweet home alabama" riffage and mention to it...completely un-original garbage imho...I could take zeppelins "Kashmir" write lyrics that say 100% the same thing as the Who's "my generation" but use a thesaurus to re-word it, and then add samples of Aerosmiths "sweet emotion" talk box intro and call it my own, probably score a hit...and laugh all the way to the bank!!!
my wife LOVES her some kid rock, but every new song seems to be less and les original...he calls it a tribute or giving someonoe props, but he is smart and he knows better...hes cashing in on others talent...
good live though :)

And those talented other people (or their estates) are cashing in as well.

Remember, he came from the rap sceene where pulling riffs, grooves, ect. and putting them together with your own lyrics is common. He just utilized it in a different idiom.

There you go. Not that your explanation will make it acceptable to many here.
The resident "Sweet Home Alabama" purists should give a listen to the Geto Boys' "Gangsta of Love" sometime. Yer damn heads'll cave in.

Well, we let our preferences dictate somewhat...
I am going to do this tune in one of my bands. We'll see how it goes over.
Some of the lyrics are just stupid though. For example in the chorus:
We were tryin' different things
We were smokin' funny things
Rhyming THINGS with...THINGS?! :NUTS
Kid can kind of belt. There's a few phrases where he shows a decent blue-eyed-soul range.

It's definitely not right...
I just do it the way it feels best to me. No one cares.

It's pentatonic minor and that doesn't work in major keys, then all blues bands must stop playing this instant!

I've been hearing that song at work, along with other re-makes, i.e. Fire & Rain/James Taylor, More than a Feeling/Boston, a Don Henley song from the 80's, etc. Where has the creativity gone? Artists doing other people's songs from the 70s/80s. New music is incredibly uninspiring & derivative; anyone else feel the same way?

me too... ugh
