The ratio of gear to gigs is hugely in favor of gear.

my gigs definitely outnumber my gear
i've only been in one band in my life, and i'm working on 12 years in it come February... we play 5-6 times a month and have since I joined. local gig, some private stuff, some clubs. everything i make goes to the family checking account, my way of paying my wife and kids for being gone when i'm gone. so, new gear is a huge luxury when i can get it. usually a new guitar every 3-4 years, new amp every 5-6, maybe a pedal or two a year... maybe a Klon for Xmas this year?

I've got about 55.76 gigs, but there's only about 1.16 available...

Wonder what Dave Gilmour or The Edge's ratio would be.

PS: Did you seriously come to a gear forum to rag on people with lots of gear? Interesting.

Hardly, I was merely stating that it's increasingly hard to find work as a band these days, and my gig to gear ratio is lower as a result. I'm also picky these days what I choose to play so I guess that factors in hugely for me.

Sure, makes total sense. Those guys that gig for a living (and I don't mean the Edge) don't make sh!t, and can't afford a lot of gear. Those guys that do something else for a living make more money, and thusly can afford more sh!t.

Interesting topic.............
I don't remember Gear being as "Mass Marketed" back in the day like it is now. I remember owning, One Amp, One Guitar (possibly Two if you were lucky) and a stomp box & maybe a Wah...........................
There were also tons of gigs because it was pre-DJ's & Karaoke....................
God I miss the 'ol days! :RoCkIn

I find the more I play out, the happier I am with my gear other than a few tweaks here and there.

Weird. I'm the opposite, I think. When I play out more I tend to start thinking about different sounds I'd like to try.

Yeah, I start flipping, buying/trading/selling when I don't have a project going. If I'm with a group, the gear bug subsides considerably.

I've been lucky this year, while I've bought and sold a ton of gear this year, I've been lucky enough to have gigged out a lot as well, for a guy that has a day job.

I play out about 75 times a year. (all acoustic) I have one acoustic
I have enough electric guitar gear to outfit Megadeth and Metallica for a 2 year tour. LOL

<kinda sorta> Sadly, my gear outnumbers my gigs .... and my band plays quite a few gigs too! :(

I don't know...I'm a believer in the "Goldilocks Principle". No matter how much gear I have, it's always just right for the gigs I have. YMMV.
