lol, the Reverend J. Mayer. Pretty cool clip and sweet tone as usual, thanks for posting.
This vid raised an important question though: Did he bring his Two Rock to class or is it a Peavey Bandit (or whatever house amps Berklee has) we hear? If the later, I predict that A) the prices will go up and B) the phrase "tone is in the hands" will appear somewhere in this thread.

Master class, mini guitar clinic with me.. BPC clinic.. John's passion, inspiration was huge impact to our students.
John did such fantastic job today... 2nd song... he put some guitar parts.. Beautifully and super tasty! Everyone had a great simile! John was looking at me and playing those parts..
I loved that black strat !!! It got very crispy? clear tone.. and very deep and warm... I know why he liked it... I was gonna steal his.. Actually one time John put his black strat into my guitar case by accident! I caught it so...
John let me played his acoustic guitar today. Froggy something? It was small guitar.
Yes, he let me try his gears. I will bring something tomorrow. I can't wait!

You're welcome. I want to tell you more.... Everyday is so big and fast! What amazing experience to me and everyone at Berklee. I was watching... since Monday... everyday. I am very lucky to sit in his master class.
Especially those 12 singer song writers... they brought own song to the class. then... JM started to cook these... now we are recording selected tunes in the studio... I am just having a huge fun. I am honored to be around him all this week..and for Berklee too. I am learning so much from John this week.
One of singers... video taped our jam (pre-clinic ...on Tuesday night) so I look forward to watch that. John played amazing solo guitar groove.. (bass line, chord and melody-solo.. new style of walking bassline!) I want to figure out ...Wow! That was fun jam with John! He showed students how to play the blues with...
We are supposed to give inspiration back to you (listeners) and we feedback each other better way. Anyone can learn licks and information. but "inspiration" and do something with that... makes big difference.
I look forward to going to the studio today. I will bring some toys for John.
Tomohttp://www02.homepage.villanova.edu/david.kaplowitz/tomo/IMG_9363.jpg
I think this is the coolest experience for all involved.
I get the impression that John is getting as much from it as you all are!
It's nice to see the student become the teacher and share his experiences.
Tomo, thanks for sharing. This is a once in a life exprience for many and something I'm sure will go down in Berklee history... I am very thankful I (we) get to read/watch/listen to any of it, technology rocks.
We have guest lecturers where I work and most are paid for 2hours of dull presentation. John is really giving a lot back here - a whole week is amazing. This guy deserves no hate. He is inspirational.
Have a good session today Tomo - good vibes in the studio I bet.

Tomo, John is incredibly talented and inspirational but please tell him I'm pissed at him for having the life I dreamed of (minus the TMZ scumbags harassing him of course)!
If he wants to talk to me later today unfortunately I will be tied up with my accountant haggling over 2002 taxes. I have to put in the extra effort to make the IRS happy for the crap money I made that year.
I'd rather be taking a walk on the beach with Jessica Simpson or Jennifer Aniston and then coming home and plugging into my Two-Rock. ;)
Anyway, sounds like an amazing week Tomo, I wish I was in your shoes (or his).

Absolutely!
My commentary was only there as I found it interesting that a guy such as Tomo (who is universally well respected here and ubertalented) was cool enough to say he learnt some things from an old student (who is always a point of contention here for no apparent reason other than his success).
I teach, and I love learning new things, it's all about openess, and this seems to be one of the coolest displays of openess from a large artist and his former academic environment I have ever seen.
Kudos to all involved. The lectures and clips are great!

Hi Tom,
I just came back from recording session. This whole week was fantastic experience for everyone. I am sure that Berklee will write about this event in their news soon... I have learned so much from John and students.
Chris Brown was on bass.. we had Eddie Bayer on drums (from Nashville)
Dana on organ.... Student singer & guitar... and John played very cool part on this tune.
That was really great to watch how John puts his guitar parts... very fresh and very smart way to layer parts... guitar and background vocals.

Someone posted this on the john mayer forum(I didn't tape it):
So, John did a 2 hour talk in Livingston Taylor's (Yes, James Taylor's brother...) class called Stage Performance Techniques today. I was in the front row, and thus recorded it with my iphone. Then I compressed the hell out of it and normalized it like a good little Berklee kid, and here it is. The quality is what it is.
Maybe this will be transcribed into a long form paper someday. And the clinic tomorrow (which might be recorded...), and possibly a radio interview.
Anyway, enjoy. There's a cool performance of WOTWTC at the end that he interpolates and explains.....
1 hour 52 minutes . . . go.

Hi Mario,
John took his vocal lessons to control his voice. You can set your goal with your pace. John did and do a lot of efforts everyday. One of his advice was (at clinic) 1) Define your expectation. So that you don't get disappointed to much. One of problems is people tends to say ...think... "I want to get better!" "To be a great guitar player... Be able to play everything!" That's too unclear... and you are not happy... because you don't set specific goal... You could overload ....
Thank you so much for buying my AYGP dvd! Thank you.
John told me this..." I wish everyone understand how much important to have solid foundation" I agree. He only spent 2 semesters at Berklee... but he continued his own education (hard work) to teach himself guitar playing... balance writing great songs...
He brain is crazy! He thinks very deep... and wide... but he nailed things very specific ways.. I admire that power and passion. His drive is very high and strong all the time. Amazing! I have learned so much watching and listening him this whole week.
Thanks John! That breathing technique too! I am gonna work on it.

This vid raised an important question though: Did he bring his Two Rock to class or is it a Peavey Bandit (or whatever house amps Berklee has) we hear? If the later, I predict that A) the prices will go up and B) the phrase "tone is in the hands" will appear somewhere in this thread.
My Berklee attending son said they did it again the next day and he saw it. He said Tomo's solo blew away John Mayer. Is that bashing? I hope not...
Great for you, Teach-ah.

Tomo I wish I could be in your class that week or any week! This is a very cool thread, thank you!
lol, the Reverend J.
John brought his TR head and 2-12 cab (not TR). Black one for his BPC clinc and recording... I asked to see his black strat after the class.... then we started to play together.. He showed us interesting tricks. Funky solo guitar stuff.. It became JM 's mini guitar clinic!
so Berklee's house amps are Fender Hot Rod Deluxe.

Thank you. John did amazing job! Everyone loved his clinic at BPC. I have blues/funk lab. A lot of fun! I was very lucky to observe his master class and 2 days recording session. He is in LA now?

John is very inspiring and his taste is very true to music. This week has been simply amazing..... amazing! I am very lucky to see all.. feel all.. John is very kind to spend a week at Berklee. I can't thank enough!

You Tomo area great person. Caring soul with the right motives in music. I love the way you help people (like me) and the humbleness you possess. Great funk chops not withstanding. You are awesome and are a very kind person. Mayer seems pretty cool too.
Tomo, John and the Class were absolutely awesome and inspiring...10 Thumbs All the way Up
Which one? My students told me that it was most informative clinic ever at Berklee... amazing 2 hours at BPC!
Thanks,
Tomo
Very nice.
Very cool Tomo, you are inspirational as well.
Thanks for your kind words. We talked about this several times.. but It was amazing that he has spent entire week at Berklee. His clinic was just inspirational experience to all. Most productive, informative 2 hours!
At studio... I was very lucky to see tracking process ... producing ... and John playing ... fills... super tasty stuff.

Sounds like a great time was had by everyone. I watched some of the you tube videos and I think we all should. I always respected him as an artist, this just reaffirms it.
Tomo,
I know I'm behind the curve but I will be picking up your DVD soon. Be sure to take credit for influencing JM, I don't think he would be half as good without you.
Wow! How cool was that!?
There really was a lot of emotion there... I could feel it through the video. I have much respect for both John and Tomo.
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! It was just amazing week for me and for everyone. I really enjoyed playing with John at BPC and some blues jam at Tuesday night.

wow, what a video. wasnt a fan of JM till this year, and he's been on heavy rotation on my ipod ever since. great stuff, thanks to the threadstarter, and many props to TOMO for being really cool and responding to every message. your insights have been illuminating.
I can say from personal experience that Tomo, in addition to being an incredible player himself, is every bit as talented as a guitar teacher as JM is as a songwriter.
Thank you for your kind of words. John is really great teacher! I am really happy to see this event really happened. See you tomorrow!

That was very, very nice. Tomo, you must be proud, and I am to know you. I think you garner some very cool karma around you, from being such a cool person. I will never forget you sending me a ton of material after speaking to you one time, and helping me out.
There were some singers in the class, too!

Hi Roger,
Thank you so much! It's nice to hear from you. I am very fortunate what I have... I came to U.S. from Japan 22 years ago... I like to help people and share my joy ... Playing guitar! Hope I can join you boars hunting!

I'm late to the thread but I took a chance on listening to some JM this year (Trio and Continuum) and came away with both on my iPod all the time...I was a self admitted skeptic and sure, I can think of guitar players that are better technicians or what not, but the dude seems like the complete package...songs are what stand the test of time and he writes some great ones...
Good on you Tomo...I toured Berklee about 2 years ago while in Boston on a business trip and would love to attend there and dedicate completely to my art. Glad you had a great week with JM, you certainly deserve it :)
Tomo,
Wow, that's amazing you got to go in the studio with John Mayer!
That's my biggest dream!
I just got to ask..what gear was John using that you noticed?
Thanks for sharing all the fun!
I was very lucky to see from first meeting with 12 students... John showed process to cook each tunes.. then cook more in the studio. He has a lot of things in his trick bag. I have learned a lot from those 2 days!
He brought a few acoustic guitars. Amp, cab... big tour case of pedals, mics, cables etc..

JM playing some tasty licks in the studio w/ Jonathan Carr.
John Mayer playing guitar on Jonathan Carr's song 'The Jokes On Me' in Mix One Studios, Boston. Jonathan is a singer/songwriter from Glasgow, Scotland, who received a partial scholarship from the Berklee College of Music at the age of 17. Listen to the whole song on his Bebo fan page (http://www.bebo.com/jonathancarrmusic).

That really is the greatest thing that he went there and did that. Really amazing for the people there. Inspirational person to say the least.
I'd love to have his life... except without most of us here bashing it all the time!
Ted seems to have worked with some great people. John has worked with some of the best tracking engineers in the biz, so that is quite the complement for Ted!
Thanks Tomo...

John said to me... Ted was top 3 of John's experience. I used to work with Ted... He is always fast and comfortable.
Tomo
Comfort and speed, two REALLY important skills in a tracking engineer!
I'm curious Tomo, what mics did John bring? Guitar related mics or vocal mics?
Thanks for sharing your experience...

Truly one of the greatest young talents in this world. Great chops and soul to boot. I hate the SRV comparison, I seriously hear more Curtis Mayfield/Hendrix voicings with a touch of Ray Lamontagne vocally. Well done, well done indeed.

1 hour 52 minutes . . . go.

This guy can sing. Play. Write. He owns every eye when he's on stage. And the band kicks butt. What more do you want? He'll be around long after his detractors are forgotten, I think.
He is a hardest working man in this business. His passion toward music... making better music, better guitar playing... bottomless... About love, music... you can give more and more... He works really hard! I saw how he works entire week! It was very very cool! Thanks John!
