Well I've just picked up my latest strat and decided to do a clip with it to see how it stacks up against my other one.
One guitar is my black maple '57 and the other is the oly white rosewood '62. They both have the same frets (6100) and they both are using the same PU ( VV Dimarzios) though the models are a little different- blues vs area 61.
I'm using the same setup (metro marshall jtm 45 clone) for both and the same backing track just to see what the differences in sound are. I thought with all the hubbub that goes on here re: maple v rosewood that this might be a fun opportunity to listen and see if you or I can hear a difference.
Granted it's not that great a test, because I'm playing different things on the two takes, but it might show us a thing or two.
Here's links to them both.
Cheers-
J

Sounds really good!
I'd guess the second clip is the '57 being its more punchy like a maple neck might be.
Though, the differences might be the pickups. But I'm not sure.
Were they REAL 57 and 62s? or Reissues?

My apologies...to clarify-These are Fender American Vintage Re-Issuue guitars. The '57 is an '86 and the '62 is from 2005-6 I guess.
I'll spill the beans soon about what's what.
Thnx-

My guess is that the first is the '62 and the second is the '57. The second clip sounds a tad brighter.

I'm going to say that the first is the '57, second is the '62.
I like to argue. :)

Mmmmmmm-
What if they're both the 57?
Just kidding-
I'll check back in about an hour and tip my hand.

The 62 is the first clip and the 57 is # 2. Most everyone got it- I don't think I would have- funny enough they're my guitars!!!
Some good ears out there-
Thanks for playing-

I got to the party late, but I guessed wrong. I thought the resonance of the guitar came through more on the first clip and so I had it pegged as a maple board strat. Interesting test. Thanks man. And cool playing!!

To my ears 50's strats always sound better. Check the following clips to hear the differences between 50's and 60's: Michael Fuller playing the OCD v1 with both strats (on the Fulltone website) and on the Speedster amps website you'll find 2 great clips with a 50's and a 60's Grosh.

I was right, yea theres is a slight punchiness in the 57. I have a 57 reissue myself, maybe that helped me catch it. I thought they both sounded good though.

Whatever the differences are, I feel that they could be compensated for from the amp, guitar tone knobs, pickups or picking technique.
I guess this really just showed me that it's more about the feel of the instrument than anything else for me. The '86 57AVRI is played in very nicely and as such the mapleboard and neck feel great. Very smooth and several patches of real wear down to the wood.

Don't you know we hear with our eyes? Let's see some pics!
I would never have guessed which was which, but the 2nd clip (apparently the '57 RI) sounded a lot clearer to me. This coming from a rosewood board guy. I'll be sure to give a maple board a serious look next time I'm looking at strats.

I'm late to the party too, but I would have guessed it right. Although I believe the difference (that I hear) to be slightly hotter pup's in the 62'. Or maybe they're just closer to the strings?

57 has the hotter PU I believe.

So the VV Blues are in the 57'?

Yes.
The 57 is a Heavy blues, blues and solo
The 62 is Area 61, Area 67 and solo
I bought the 57 with the HB and B in there and just got the solo on the recommendation of my tech. I must say it's a great bridge pickup.
I figured that I'd get a little air in the neck and middle positions with the area PU, but I didn't want to change a thing on the bridge position I liked it so much- and I never liked the bridge on any strat before.
BTW...anyone know what year the Oly white is?

I liked the second clip better, and I thought it was the '62 as it sounded warmer. I guess I was wrong! I also prefer a maple neck for feel.

I like them both, but I'm still getting to know the '62. It's a really nice guitar for sure.
