Got 3 new CDs in the mail today,

Classic India (a National Geographic sampler of classical indian music featuring the sitar)

Gary Burton Quintet: Dreams So Real (vibraphone jazz featuring a young Pat Metheny and an all too seldom recorded Mick Goodrick)

Planet X: Quantum (prog-metal featuring 61 year old Allan Holdsworth on 2 tracks)


I've been listening to them in the order listed, and I really like them all, each in their own sweet way. Am I a (musical) schizophrenic, or are there only 2 kinds of music - good & bad? :phones

Me too, and I'm definitely a musical schizophrenic, also. I sometimes wonder what it would have been like to focus on only one style, but I love too many bags and I've always HAD to learn something about everything. It's kind of like a kid getting to dress up in different costumes each halloween.

I'd love to check all those out, think I might follow your lead and get 'em myself. I'd really love to hear early Metheny and Goodrick.

Me too... music that gets me off and music that doesn't... there is no universal "good" and "bad", IMO; like all art, there is stuff that tweaks me and stuff the leaves me flat.

+1 I can't ever decide on a sound to stick to because all of them can offer so much. Part of me wants compose songs like Yann Tiersen, part of me wants to make an album that puts Pentagram to shame, part of me wants to take over where Slayer went wrong(after Seasons in the Abyss,) part of me wants to make the albums missing between Nick Drake and Elliott Smith, and so on and so forth. I guess it'll sort itself out eventually. :dunno

I love listening to all sort of music, but when it comes time to pick up the guitar and practice, I keep it to one or two general styles, otherwise I think it's too easy to fall into the "jack of all trades, master of none" trap.

London Electricity - Syncopated City ...the new album from, probably, my favourite Drum & Bass artists.
Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul ...their best album since 1995's (What's The Story) Morning Glory?

i truly believe that those unwilling to listen to genres other than their favorites are only ripping themselves off. all music has something to offer. yes, even rap. as awful as they might be, groups like NWA and 2 live crew opened the door allowing other artists' freedom of expression. (thats not to say that some performers dont have an inappropriate idea of what "freedom of expression" is)

just my thoughts. i try to be as open minded as possible, and sometimes i get heckled by my buddies for it. try changing a skynard CD for lil' wayne at a party with mostly good ol' boys.
