Went and saw Michael Burks last night here in Tallahassee, Fl. It was a good time and a great show and a surprising number of college girls made the trek out into the boonies to cut the rug. I posted a few videos to youtube although I am new with the Blackberry so footage and sound are shiite. During the bands break, Michael was at the bar and I got a chance to talk with him for about 5 or 10. He told me how two guys that run the LA GC apparently got a cd of his to Dumble and Dumble got in contact with him to make him an amp, his high regard for Dumble who he referred to as a wizard and a genius, a humbucker pickup Dumble has made which blew his mind and he said that Larry Carlton's amp was a 150W Steel String Singer that will take your head off (which I don't get, I've always seens the ODS. I am sure he probably has one) He also confirmed that it is nearly impossible to get the amp serviced so he keeps it at a studio and that Dumble is in declining health. No new insights in any of this but for me it was cool to talk Dumble with a Dumble player just in a "for the memory books" kinda way. He was playing through a Dr. Z SRZ 65 with the Bass and Mids Cranked, Treble out and gain at 11:00. Very loud amp, barely turned up through a Soul Preacher and a Klon.

Cool story!
Dumble must have been pretty impressed with that CD!

I'm a big fan of Burks. So much so that we cover 3 of his tunes.

It was very cool for a dork like me to be getting one man's version of the man, the myth, the legend. I just started going to this Blues Club 'cause between last week and CXhristmas they are having/have had Tinsley Ellis, Jimmy Thackery, Michael Burks, Tab BEnoit and Chris Duarte. We are talking a real juke joint with maybe 75-100 people in attendance, very intimate performances.

I've met and spoke with Michael a couple of years ago.
He's a sweetheart of a guy and was kind enough to go to his van and get me his first CD, "From the Inside Out", after I told him I had the rest but was trying to find this one.
It is unavailable and turned out to be my favorite too.

IIRC I remember reading that there is a pre-contract 2000 Live CD also.

First time I heard one of his cuts I was sold for life.
One of the best.

Michael's a real talented player/singer/writer and a super nice guy - real generous with his time. He played here about five years ago so we had dinner together before curtain. I remember they pulled up wtih a regular van that was loaded to the gills including a B-3 and Leslie cab, etc. That thing was begging for mercy. He was the closer that night and layed for almost two hours and would have kept on playing if it hadn't been so late. Glad to see he's getting the attention he deserves.

Michael's cool and can sometimes be found hanging at the Dr Z. amps forum under the user ID ironman.

If you've never heard him, you can check him out (along with Johnny A., Johnny Winter, Neal Schon, Eric Johnson, Tinsley Ellis, Slash and several others in relatively high bitrate, unprotected MP3 format) at no charge courtesy of Gibson and HDtracks.com at:

Great stuff and free is a very good price.

Enjoy,

Yeah...BBC has always been trying to get me to turn down..

Yeah,we kinda had a hard time in there .I think there were a bunch of older people in there who were expecting some folky Robt. Johnson sh*t or somethin. But I really like the location though and the bartender in hot pants who was moved to get up & shake 'er moneymaker on the bar

Yeah it almost feels like your playing in someones living room which is cool but you have to severly adjust from the regular club style venue....I did Halloween two years in a row as a connector for the old sound advice blues fest in lauderdale and was always hurting the next day we had so much fun...

Ditto

...and speaking of loud...

Back in the day we used to pop the breakers every time we played there so I have the honor of getting the phone call from the owner who put the electrician on the phone with me and he said tell him what he needs to install so you won't pop any more breakers! This was back when Dave owned it and thanks to my ridiculous PA from hell the current AC near the stage is on a separate circuit from everything else. Back then when we blew the breaker the whole place would go dark!

No ,but as I recall she and another lady came by the bass players room after the gig.Maybe he's got pics :worried

We were not so loud.We were a rock band ,I think that was the problem .We used the same gear we use in my living room.A Marshall 4010 for guitar ,a Bassman 135 for bass and a Champ for harmonica.I wasn't like Thackery and them guys crankin up a Twin .....
Musta been that damn drummer's cowbell

Man we had a good time shootin pyrotechnics in that field

We just had Jimmy in for a show in Gainesville this past Sunday (right after BBC). He was playing two Category 5s. Neither more than 50 watts. Loud but not outrageous. Certainly not Twin level.

His comment on the Cat 5s was that they have spoiled him forever from playing Fenders. One was an Andrew and one was a Typhoon Joe. One is Fender voiced the other Marshall. Sounded great.
