I know that I'm supposed to use 100% acrylic latex exterior house paint, but I'm not sure which specific brand of paint is best for the job. Any experts on this want to chime in?
Thanks.

This is using Sherwin Williams one coat of finish...Pressure wash, Seal with S/W Loxon Pigmented Sealer (LATEX), Finish coat with S/W A100 or Duracraft(cheaper) Satin Paint ( LATEX) gallons needed with be.. Spread rate on Sealer approx 300 sq' per gallon..on finish approx 275 sq' (spreadrates are real world not manufactorers).. say your surface/house is 2000 sq' you will need 7gals of sealer and 8 gallons of finish..Homeowner/location price for mats? Lets guess $20.00 per gal on sealer and $32.00 per gal of finish
$140.00 + 7% tax= $150.00 Sealer
$256.00 +7% tax=$274.00 Finish
Total w/tax $424.00 add 15% sundries $63.00
$487.00 or .24cents sq' on a 2000 sq' house for mats
Good luck:)
I recommend and use Benjamin Moore paint.
Use Nitro Laquer... you'll have the most tonefull house on the block.... let the Joneses try to keep up with THAT!

We used that Sherwin Williams super paint a few years ago and it has held up incredibly.

Have you heard of Novabrik (http://www.thegearpage.net/board/neighborhood)? It's a masonry veneer that's hung much like a siding (no mortar). A few houses have been done with this stuff in my neighborhood. Not too expensive and easy enough to install.

Not a big fan of all brick siding, actually. Around my neighborhood, there are quite a few of them and they all have really old people living in them. Over the years, I've come to associate that with the 'old folks home' look. :D
This house actually has a brick front and aliminum siding on the back and sides.

Update on this topic, I decided to talk to a neighbor down the road who does some paint work part-time and he really seems to know his stuff. I asked him about the Sherwin-Williams paints and he said that they're good, but inconsistent. He's known quite a few people who had problems with their paint job after just a short while, so he couldn't recommend them. He actually recommended that I use Glidden instead...said he never had a problem with them. Always had consistently good results.
He also said that it's too late in the year to do this. The days are getting too short and the nights too cold, so the paint won't cure like it should. We're going to wait until the spring and do it right.
Anyway, thanks for you help, guys.

Actually, when I met my wife, she had just built our house. The siding was pretty much pink. Now I can do a pink shirt, and have a pink Strat, but the pink siding was too much pink for me. Now, 15 years later, it is a sort of sand color and looks pretty good finally LOL

Yeah, they seem to be the way to go. Home Depot carries them and I think they're a little cheaper than Sherwin-Williams anyway...I think, not sure.

Your friend is steering you in the wrong direction. I have been in the painting business for over 25 years and Sherwin Williams paints are just fine. Matter of fact, most paints are including some sold at Wal-Mart. If you have aluminum siding the best way to go is this: clean it with regular old bleach and water. You do NOT need all those fancy smancy cleaners on the market and your wasting your money if you buy anything other than bleach to clean with.
The way we clean our homes with aluminum siding before painting is with a garden sprayer, the type you spray chemicals on weeds but make sure the sprayer has not been used with chemicals. Do a section at a time and then spray the house down with a garden hose. The bleach will NOT kill plants if you hose the area down after bleaching.
After cleaning, apply two coats of exterior latex flat, semi-gloss or gloss paint from Sherwin Williams (we use their Super Paint) and your done. You may have to do some sanding if the siding has been pitted from the weather but please, do not let anyone tell you differently or sell you something you do not need. If you want further help, P.M. me and I can help you finish this project without extra expenses and stuff you do not need. Remember, the paint stores managers usually work on commission so they want to sell as much as they can and the most expensive product.
Oh yeah, the mention of using Loxon is an ok idea but not needed. That is a very expensive product that we used this past spring and is best off for problem adhesion areas.

Well, I've used a friend's power washer before and I'm sure he'll let me borrow it again to clean the siding. The painter didn't recommend I do anything special to clean the siding either, so no problem there. He did say that no matter how much you clean the siding, it's not enough...you'll still have residue. So, he recommended that we coat it with primer first and then we might only need a single coat of finish and that's it.
He was only giving me his personal experiences with Sherwin-Williams...I'm sure others have different ones, but he's going to do the paint job for me in the spring, so I feel comfortable letting him use what he feels is the best paint for the job. I don't want to go another way and then find out that he was right all along.
Thanks for the tips.

im not familiar with it, but arent there a few companies out there now that spray aluminum siding with something similar to a truck bed liner...i want to say i have seen it before, not sure of the cost and durability but could be worth checking out...

I agree with SvenHock..However the Loxon product he was thinking of might have been different. SW uses the "Loxon" desination for a wide variety of products..What I was taking about was a simple bonding primer( conditioner ) and is releativly inexpensive.. in Florida contractors price is only about $12.50 a gallon. Here (FLA) we can't go without this step due to weather conds breaking down the finish coats(chalking). Most manufactorers make a good can of paint for the same $..ICI/Dulux(Glidden), Ben Moore , S/W, Pittsburg etc.and wharehouse brands like Baer (Home Depot) are all good paints .
