Just was curious if there were any other knife lovers here on TGP. My passion for knives has officially been brought back to life recently on vacation stop to a HUGE knife store.
Thanking about getting me a Sebenza here soon! If you love knives you'll know what I'm talking about!;)

My nicest knife is a Cold Steel Caledonian Edge. It was given to me by my uncle who is big into martial arts and such. It's really an awesome piece.

I love my cold steel voyager.
I've had it for 5 years now and it's still incredibly sharp. And talk about amazing design and ergonomics!

My grandmother lived 5 minutes away from Jimmy Lile's shop in Russellville, Arkansas. As a kid who grew up on action movies, that place held a lot of significance as that's where the RAMBO knives were made. :)

I like old folding knives... Case, Boker, etc. I've collected a few but I don't spend big bucks on them nor do I have any GAS for more.
Yup, me. Ever since I was a little Smü, I had one or another or both variations of this helpful tool with me. Bought lots, broke lots, have lots.

I am currently selling off some of my Randalls to pay for a shotgun that I am having made in Spain.
I have a new out the front switch blade by cold Steel "the Infidel" I got it because I loved the name!

Agreed, but remember we're just talking knives here, not who deserves to be on the business end of one.
I appreciate the craftsmanship in fine knives but haven't been bitten by the knife bug. Anything I collect I want to use. So I'm happy with my Buck Hunter. My Army buddy has a nice Cold Steel Tanto. Very functional.

I've been making knives semi-professionally for years, using a coal-fired forge, hammers, and an anvil. About the only power tools I use are a drill press (to drill rivet/pin holes) and a small bandsaw (for cutting out handles). I like knives!

You ever owned or tried out the Chris Reeve Sebenza?
I'm seriously thinking about pulling the trigger on one. Just seems like one of those knives you'll hardly ever have to sharpen, and will stay with you forever.
I just really don't like buying a ton of stuff, just buy a couple REALLY good ones and be done....you know?

Any experience with the Sebenza? I've heard they hardly ever need to be sharpened and are probably one of the smoothest opening knives out there.

I'm 50.
That knife is in my pocket every day. That knife & I "have history". It taught me about wasteful behavior at a very young age. I said earlier that I got it when I was 7. Yes, I got it when I was 7, but I haven't actually "had it since"....Here's what happened:
Undoubtedly like so many other entry-level cub scouts, I didn't feel "complete" without the Cub Scout knife hanging from my belt. (remember the little brass belt clip for that purpose?) I wanted the knife SO badly! And that Christmas, I got it! It was a very big deal for me.
The next spring, I lost it. Didn't know where or when it had happened, but one day, I noticed that it was "just gone". I tore the house apart, in vain. I was devastated. Months later, dad found it in the back yard where I had apparently dropped it. Mud encrusted, rusty, couldn't open it. It was in an ugly state of affair.
"I found your knife" he said.
Taking one look, it was clear to me that this knife was toast. I said something dumb like "Well, it's garbage now".
"Garbage, huh?" the old man replied. "So it's ok if I throw it away, right?"
"Sure", says the dumb kid. "It's no good anymore."
"Well, if we're just going to throw it out, can I have it?" dad asks casually.
Why would the old man want such a piece of trash? "Sure, I suppose".
"So this knife is mine now, right"
"Yes"
"Son, you're sure now, right?"
"Dad, it'd gross & rusty. I don't want it".
"OK" he says. "Just checking".
I go off to sulk, he goes down to the shop and begins the methodical process of de-scaling, oiling & soaking the rusty, encrusted artifact. A few weeks later he's resurrected the knife. Sure, there's surface pitting & discoloration, but it's fully operable & razor sharp. (Camillus used extremely good, high-carbon steel)
Some time later, he & I were doing something requiring a knife, and he whips out the Cub Scout knife.....all bright & shiny!
"HEY!!! MY KNIFE!!!!" I shout in excited effervescence.
Calmly, he asks, "Who's knife?"
I start to say "My knife! You know....My Cub Scout Knife!", but as the words come out, the reality smacks me like a brick-to-the-head: I gave it to him! Crap! :jo It's HIS knife! Crap again!
We never discussed it again. I had learned.
~~~~~~
My dad gift-wrapped it and gave it to me for my 30th birthday. Best gift I ever received. It's been in my pocket every day, ever since.
Thanks, dad. For everything.
2 Cold Steel Tanto's. 1 large recon parkerized, the other a regular tanto about 6 in.
A handfull of misc. Case and Buck.
My fav is a 48 Case XX in mint)I can't remember the model)......theses are getting pretty pricey.
Kitchen knives are at the top of my list when buying steel.
Some Culinar Wustaf and vintage Gustav Emil Ern...lol the Gustaf is about a 12in blade. People get a kick when I whip that puppy out.
Og course it is German Soligen, that is what I like the best for the kithchen..
There are some others.....I need to go on a search.
Im about into boutique knives as I am boutique musical gear........Most anything I use is gonna get beat to shreds,so I stay pretty basic
Im only into knives that I actually use .Since I was 10 I've wanted a Schrade Uncle Henry large lockblade .I finally got one the Summer of 2000 at the Hard Times pawn shop in Wendover,NV for about 15 bucks !! Many a time I have forgotten to take my knife outa my back pocket while taking an early morning flight.A week before Sep 11 I was taking a flight out of Denver.The Hatian dude workin security was so concerned with the DOD 250 in my carry on (Turn it on ,make it work .....) that he and I failed to notice the big knife in my ass pocket.In fact I didn't notice it 'til I sat down on the plane .I still have it ,try not to air travel with it.The badge fell out ,mybe they'll send me another .Skinned a lotta deer with THAT ONE
My dad gave me a big folding Ka-bar knife from the 60s when I was a teenager.I had it for a long time until about 1987 it went over the side when i was in the USCG workin on the Mississippi .I fished a couple of my knives outa there with a big speaker magnet ,but not that one .Lost a lotta knives in there .I ended up gettin our dept heads to order a stash of govt issue Camillus marlinspike knives .I kept mine for a long time and used after the service when I was doin tree work
Back in the 80s I had a Schrade scrimshaw lockblade that I was quite fond of.It had a picture of 2 rooster turkeys fightin .Unfortunately I lost it bouncin around on the back of a horse.I look on ebay from time to time for that same one .I've lost a couple of good knives on horseback including a nice stag horn handled knife that my dad brought from Germany in the 50s.
I had a wife from Switzerland,so therefore I have many Victorinox Swiss Army knives,some for guitar/electronics work and some for skinnin
In fact I like the Swiss Army lockblade with the little skinner blade a lot .It'll open a deerskin like there was a zipper there .There's a guy in Switzerland with a knife store .Everytime friends get married I usually get 'em some hiz n hers Swiss army from over there with their name engraved on the handles.Great,functional gifts
I have an old (It's vintage ....) Camillus USN issue leather handled Bowie style that my mom loves to use for butchery every winter
Im not a big fan of stainless knives .I like a knife that'll rust .They seem to sharpen up the best IMO
I pawn shop for knives just like I do for guitars,but nothin has jumped out at me for a long time
Those Kershaw Shun Classic knives ARE great by the way - I own 2 of their 8" Chef's knives, pairing, utility, bread, & shears. Top notch. Would love to pick up one of their 7" santokus soon, as I do a lot of veg prep and I'd like the wider blade for picking / scraping more up off the board.
The Cold Steel? Stilleto looks excellent.(I have one..just forgot about it...a cheap import)
How could I forget my Spyderco's?????? Great knives in all styles.
Last but not least, I also like my Gerbers(1 is a multitool) and a Leatherman Multitool.
The multitools are the most functional knives ever IMO.
Also a Bayonet from my old M1 Garrand...It is not a Randall (What the hell is it without dragging it out???).
Told you I would think of others!
With this many knife commonsewers around, maybe somebody can help me find out where I can get a nice sheath to fit my old Rigid Cherokee lockblade. For those who don't know the knife, it's essentially what a Buck Folding Hunter wants to be when it grows up. Nearly 5" long folded and weighs pretty near half a pound. Nylon or leather, whichever, if anyone can point me towards a decent sheath I'd be thankful.
In a previous life, I was the General Manager for Emerson Knives. I've been a knife guy longer than a guitar guy.
Interestingly enough, there are a lot of guitar guys amongst the knife crowd. Ernie Emerson is actually making some guitars now.
I think that the appeal of the gadget be it a knife, watch, pen, guitar, as quite common among males of our species.
Kind of funny, how everyone seems to be o.k. with a knife thread, but start a gun thread and there will be a group who will have to make comments or complain about how this is a guitar forum and guns do not belong here.
I'm partial to two types of knives:
1) Damascus steel - for their beauty and character
2) lightweight ones - for backpacking (when you gotta carry everything...it matters)
I carried a nice Benchmark hung upside down on my body armor in Iraq.
My Ranger buddy would walk up and in a split second pull it out and hold it against my throat and say "Hey, this is a nice knife"! :eek:
"Very nice of you to hang it here so the enemy can conveniently use it on you"!:NUTS
I dig knives, I have a few, nothing special. All bought overseas in the box.
Just take my dumbass story and learn from it.
Please consider that a knife is a close in weapon and whomever is fastest and coolest ends up with it!
I carry a Gerber that was issued to me on 2004 enroute to the "box".
Does everything!
Yes, the Emerson is a CQC-7, w/wave. I really need to buy a Sebenza.
I'd love to have another Randall, too. There is a local shop here with ties to Randall that has been able to consistently bypass the multi year wait-list and order and receive a lot of their knives rather quickly. I stumbled in the place out of boredom one day a few years ago and was completely piefaced to see a showcase filled with Model 1's, 2's, 14's, 15's, etc., all at sub $350 catalogue prices. I bought three of them on the spot and sold two the next day to cover the cost of the Model 1 that I kept. I called them up a few weeks ago and they still have a good selection of Randalls for sale, but have apparently caught on to the notion that they bring a lot more than the catalogue price on ebay :(
I really like my CQC-7 but I don't know if it's got the same blade as yours as mine has the Benchmade butterfly on it. So I guess Emerson's blades are touted as being much better?
I don't know anything about the Emerson/Benchmade joint venture CQC-7, but Id imagine its the same or very similar to the Emerson CQC-7. The two production Benchmade knives I own are every bit as good as any production Emerson I've ever handled. I've never handled a non-production Ernest Emerson built folder, but I know there are people who gladly sign up for the 10 year wait that it takes for him to deliver one.
Yeah I'm really happy with my Benchmade.....feels like the type of knife that can go swimming with you, get burried in sand and still clean up and work like new every time. The Glock of the knife world if you will.
I'm a Randall and CRKT fan, personally.
An artful device, the knife.
...i like machetes and big, manly swords. but, in a pinch, a good, solid bread knife will do. can't beat a butter knife for "artful" however. butter sculptures...yum!
Whelp, my Small Sebenza Classic arrived today from KnifeArt (great site by the way and QUICK shipment).
Words can't describe how classy this knife is! It's so smooth, and ROCK SOLID at lockup. I never thought I'd own a knife, or that it was even possible to not move at all, but this knife does that. I love the blade shape, seems like it's going to be really useful in a lot of applications.
As far as use, I do not intend to leave this in the desk or in a case, it's going to stay with me at all times, and get used (within reason).
Still on a Sebenza high guys!
Kind of funny, how everyone seems to be o.k. with a knife thread, but start a gun thread and there will be a group who will have to make comments or complain about how this is a guitar forum and guns do not belong here.
I always used to say to knife haters that "knives, unlike guns, have more than one purpose."
One time, my knife hating mother in law said to me, and I quote "All you want to do with knives is stab someone!" This was at our annual X-mas trip to her home for the holidays. I looked up at her, incredulously, and said "Surely you don't mean that. I'm should take EVERY kitchen knife away from you today and see how long you survive." (Now I'm feeling empowered - it was the very first time I stood up to her shit.)
Later that day, she came to me an apologized for that remark, saying she realized how awful it sounded when I pointed it out to her.
Not that I have a problem with guns...
I just saw a $3,500.00 knife on one of those websites.....it looked like a utility knife from the Home Cheapo. :NUTS
Puh! I was talking to one of my knife dealer pals a couple days ago, lamenting I sold him my incredible Michael Walker folder to him for way too little, then he told me he sold it for $500 more than he paid me for it (I sold it for $1800, he sold it for $2300), and now it's worth around $18,000! Yes, $18,000!
But that's nothing. The King Tut Dagger reproduction that the late Buster Warenski painstakingly made of solid gold is valued over $250,000. I wonder what the REAL King Tut Dagger would bring at auction.
How much is priceless?:drool
I just collect cheap ones that I think look cool, most just sit on the shelf since they are cheaply made and wouldn't hold up to use but do look cool on my shelf lol. If I had a job or hobby that called for a good knife then I'd shell out but really the only thing I ever use them for is cutting open packages and boxes.
