I go to work at 5:30am and get off at 2:00, 4:00 or 6:00 pm depending on what's happening at work. My average work week is 57 hours or so. My average since Sept. 6th has been zero.
sorry just got the poll in....
Should we include the time spent on TGP in there? :rotflmao

I get to work at 6 and leave around 3. I run a forum for our company on this same software and spend the evening monitoring that and email for issues and posts. Weekends as well.
And on call 24/7 for the alarm.:puh

I'm on about 8 hours a day at the moment, give or take. Just come off a year of 72 hour weeks, that wasn't so much fun, but I made it through somehow.

I start my day before 7:00 am and finish around 5:00 pm. It's a pretty good job and can be a lot of fun. It doesn't feel like I'm working that many hours a week.

I cook in a crummy Lunch Bar (that's Australia's equivalent to a diner to you US folk) - get up at 5.30 am and start work at 7.30 am or 8 am and finish at 1pm pretty much every week day. Total hours at work are usually around 25-26 a week. The place shuts at 3pm so I don't ever work later than that and it's closed on weekends. Although I've got an extensive University education, I couldn't really find a better job for work-life balance. I can play a lot of guitar in my free time and still cover the rent. Life is sweet.

Americans really put the hours in. I've worked in other countries and have been amazed at the few hours others put in. Not to mention vacation times, which average about two weeks here and 4-6 weeks in much of the world. Sometimes I think we (in the U.S.) are getting the short end of the stick. Life in Italy is pretty sweet despite what we would consider a lack of work ethic. The company I worked for was based in Italy and I was shocked by this at first. One of our busiest months here is in August and the plant and offices in Italy were essentially closed all month. Couldn't get away with that here.
I was in Cork city in Ireland and I was out for a walk one morning and I thought it was a bank holiday as there was no real traffic out at 8:15 in the morning. About 8:45 all hell broke out as everyone was coming to work. Then there was an lunch break of between 1-1.5 hours which often included alcohol (this way over much of Europe). Then wound down about 4-4:30.
We in America work more like the Asians (many hours and would not think of 2 hour lunches with booze). I don't think there is a right or a wrong but I think the cultural differences are fascinating.

Taking alcohol with lunch is common in Europe, and they've been around longer than the US, so I think they must be doing something right. Companies here in Australia are starting to do random alcohol and drug testing, and it really pisses me off.

I'm a teacher. My paid hours are 7:10-2:40 M-F. That doesn't account for grading papers and planning though. I guess it depends on the day/week.

Automotive design/engineering, we keep downsizing, and expect the survivors to do the work of many...with no rate increases...
so basically each year since 2002 Ive had to do the work of additional people, lose benifits, increased co pays, no increases in salary...work more for less, thats our motto...europe is looking better and better every day

Work 2300-0730, sometimes six nights in a row. Work holidays, weekends....been doing it for YEARS. Sometimes have to come in the daytime again for "training". Dangerous job too...especially if not well-rested.

During December I work about 12 - 14 hours with my only day off being Christmas day. That is only because the store is closed. I would be there if it wasn't.
Good Times.

i am in europe (germany)
for me its mo-fri. 8am to 5pm. 30days off/year.
i am the IT department of the company so there´s a couple of weekends to work (unpaid that is) and i have to carry a 24/7 emergency cell phone with me. if they call me in the middle of the night and i have to drive to the branch to fix something, i still have to show up and be there from 8-5 (those night shifts are unpaid). there are days that i wish i could get myself a beer at lunch brake, but that would mean immediate loss of job.
i know some guys that worked in IT over here and then moved to the usa.
they said that the overall quality of life is better in the usa.
they get about the same pay but overall can afford a better living.
grass is always greener eh

When we get done with our strike I get to look forward to 19 days on 2 days off. 10 hours at least per weekend day and 8 for Saturday and Sunday. That's just until I reach 128 hours of overtime for the quarter at which point they can't make me work anymore OT until the start of the next one. I do anyway since my hourly rate blows.
Full time caretaking is 24/7 and rough. I put > 12.
