Hey folks:

I had asked some advice here about Digital SLR cameras a while ago and wanted to post what I ended up with. Last week I took delivery of a Canon XSi. It's been very nice thus far and a good tool for my introduction to digital SLR. Thought I would share a few pics with it. Sorry, no gear shots yet.... those should be coming soon though.

Hey blood5150. I got it for just under $600 new from Dell of all places. Used they can be had for a little less, but not much.

Mojocaster & Photoguy:

Thank you very much for the kind words. Glad you enjoy the pics.

Very nice!

Now tell me about the first two pics -- what is that first one? I see stitching I think?

The second one looks like metal or papier mache flowers...... ?

The first one is a floor lamp that has been made out of a cylinder of rock that was drilled out thin so the light could pass through. Pretty cool looking in person!

The second is a set of roses that an artist had carved from stone. Pretty intense!

Yeah really cool shots mate. They're all very interesting.

It's strange how there is such a skill involved in just taking photos. I don't think that I have it but you my friend seem to.

Great work! Why not register something in some local photography competitions?

Wow, thanks for the kind words and encouragement everyone! I really appreciate and am very glad that you like my first couple pics with the SLR. There are some great photographers on this board so it is nice to know that I have people who can teach me a lot!

Here's a few more from the same couple of days:

Fabulous!!! OK you need to answer again! In the last three.... what is the first one???

(this is actually good, that I can't tell what it is, other than enjoying the color and composition of the photograph itself).

Hey ML:

the first one is a pice of copper art hanging on a wall that I saw. I decided to shoto it from a weird angle to get the light reflecting differently. Glad you are enjoying!

not my cat and he's not rubin' up on anything... he was walking by and then looked over his shoulder.

Thanks for sharing, jrm, great work. Do you attend a lot of art galleries/museums? I especially enjoy good b & w photography; I try to look out for good exhibitions/permanent collections whenever I'm in a town with good museums.

And did you have much photography experience before taking the plunge with your digital SLR? I've just got a pedestrian digital camera and realize that I don't want to get too interested in the gear side of photography, one mania is enough!;)

Thanks zenfreud. I actually don't really go to any galleries and museums on my own. I was hanging out with some friends from out of town when they wondered into this place with more rock carvings, fossils, blown glass, etc... than I've seen in a long time. So I took pics. Most of them have a pricetag in them!

Nope.. didn't have a lot of photography experience per se, but did have some. Long ago in high school I took a photography class. It was all manual on an old SLR camera. Hadn't picked one up in about 7 years really before I grabbed this DSLR. The XSi is a very nice introduction to DSLR (IMO).... and relatively cheap compared to some of the other options out there. it was a tough call for me... digital camera or tele? well, I've got guitars, I don't have a camera. Choice made!

I just took the product flash tour and that looks like an incredible camera for the money.

Did it come with a remote control?

ebay:

It really is a great value.. considering that with some patience and looking around i can be had brand new with a lens for under between $550 and $600. No, it did not come with a remote, but actually I've read of people using old graphing calculators as remotes... I guess there are ways to program a graphing calc to tether to the camera. sounds interesting... If there's any other questions I can answer, let me know!

Great Shots...I love the Canon SLR's
I've got the XTi and I bought the really affordable macro lens - EFs 60mm - lets you have near-pro results with a slim budget.

Here's the macro at work:

Nice camera but GREAT shots!
Loved the river shot. Out there in Vail you've certainly got a big choice of outdoor material, and your compositional talents show that you'll be able to take advantage of it.
