What a great day we had. He caught his first "real" fish! I think the smile on his face says it all! Not bad for a Michigan largemouth...

Haha....Thanks guys. He did have a life vest on, but elected to keep it on his seat after a while.

Here is my good friend Dan. He caught the biggest one of the day. I had to settle for 4 largemouth...

That's a pretty good sized largemouth for up there ,isn't it?

About 7 years ago I was fishin with my son.He must've been about 4 at the time.I was bass fishin but I had him fixed up with a catfish rig.His casting abilities were a little sproadic ,and well slightly dangerous. So it was better that he just threw out there once and let it sit
So Im castin and then I see the kid going slowly down the bank. Finally he says,"Uh dad,I could use a little help here." So I go give him a hand .Turns out he hooked about a 9 pounder
I would've loved to had a video cam with me when he was lettin the fish pull him to the water's edge

This was caught in northern MI, so yeah, its pretty good. It was about 3lbs in guessing. I put a Texas rigged worm on and we were drifting, so the casting was kept to a minimum!
He bought himself a new rod with his vacation money, and practiced casting quite a bit.
He caught, and released this one all by himself!

Always up there with great moments, rites of passage, and all around good stuff. I remember each of my kids first fish. I littlest girl caught a very nice walleye first time out. My son and eldest daughter caught smaller sized channel cats. Thanks for the thread that brought me back to some fond memories.

My "hims" turned out to be "hers", and they never warmed up to fishin' or racin', although I do still have a video of my oldest daughter with a rainbow trout she caught when she was about 5 in the local lake where we lived in Evergreen, CO. She wanted to "take him home and eat him"...but I prefer to catch and release. So, after a little posing for pictures, she put it back.

Great post! That smile on your boy's face is priceless!! Great looking Bass as well. I would imagine a largemouth that size up there is worthy of braggin rights. I'd love to go up there for smallmouth's one day, since they don't have them around here.

Some of my best memories with my Dad are from many, many fishing/camping trips. A really magical bond is created that words cannot simply convey. I've had precious few opportunities to do the same with my son as I work 65 hours a week, and Sunday is my only day to spend any time at all with my kids. My day often is allocated to simply "catching up". The few times we have gone have been great though. Man...I need a career change bad!!!

it is a great day when we go fishing
and sometimes
we may even catch fish,

our rule is catch and release, unless you are eating that fish in the next few hours, no exceptions
my three daughters and son all learned how to fish, my youngest daughter is now 17, and she has the mojo, when others are casting, she is catching, it is as though the fish migrate to her and throw themselves into the boat or onto the shore, she has had the power since the day she started casting at the age of 3
started tying about three months later

Congrats!!!

When I was a teenager and my Dad and I were at each other's throats for no reason, it was hunting and fishing where we found common ground. Fishing is the best.

Love the smile...and that bass is a beauty.

I went with my son a couple weeks ago; the fish weren't as big, but the smiles were. Here's a cool little perch he caught. The stuff memories are made of.

Nice fish for sure.

Did you realize putting a Detroit cap on a minor child is considered child abuse is some states? Oh the humanity!!......

Looks like a pumpkinseed sunfish to me!

That bass is quite the prize for a first fish...your son will remember that one forever. I still remember mine from when I was about 4...a little great lakes perch, pulled him out of Lake Michigan. Still have the picture somewhere.

Congrats to your son, and to you for raising him well (and few things are better for child-raising that taking them fishing!)

That's amazing that he released it himself. My kids are fine with catching 'em but then it's always pointed in my direction for unhooking and releasing.

I take my son and daughter float fishing on the Susquehanna for smallmouth every year. Last time my daughter who was 11 got her lure snagged and the drag was singing on the reel because the current was pushing us down river. She thought she had a fish. I said "Emma, you're snagged." Then I saw this big ass bronzeback leap out of the water and crash back in. I was like "holy sh*t!! Her: "Dad, I TOLD you."

I've been fishing for smallies for years and this was about as big as any I've seen caught in person there. It was about 4 and half pounds.

I was nervous. She was cool as ice. :jo

I have the greatest memories of growing up with my dad taking me fishing. Whether it was out deep in the Gulf for grouper or just fishing night crawlers or hoppers off of a cane pole.

Actually, I'm studying to be a school teacher right now and every so often some asks me what memories I had of great teachers. Hardly a one. My father took the time, while being busy bread-winning man himself, and taught me everything I ever needed to know.

Congratulations to you guys and those dads making the time to take their kids out to the water!

It was my grandfather (Big Daddy) who always took my brother and I fishing when we were young. It was probably the single greatest thing about growing up. We went all the time, and always caught fish. I wasn't the "catch and release" type back then...heck, at that age, I didn't even have a clue...I just knew we "threw back" the little ones...so my grandmother would always fry up our catch.

Who knows? Maybe I'll still be around when my daughters have children...and I can take them fishing.

Thanks guys for all the great stories! Someone told me earlier this year that "If your not making money, you better be making memories".

Ive been trying hard to make that happen. JB on the Sleeping Bear Dunes.

Very cool!!! Growing up every Monday in the summer I went fishing with my grandpa (dad passed when I was 7). To this day I still try to fish every Monday to keep the sanity. I go out for a few hours usually a few days a week. I can't wait to have a little guy/girl of my own.
