Saw Satriani last night, and had really good seats. Leslie West and Mountain opened, and though I only know "Mississippi Queen", they were great...West's a really solid player. He played Budda amps (in white tolex?), which I've never heard live before...they sounded pretty solid, though a little trebbly.
Satch was great, as you'd expect...and his tone was really good...may make me re-think my opinions of the Peavey JSX! His bass player Stu also did a great, long bass solo including Zep's "Going to California". The finale was Satriani and West playing together. It's a great show; if it comes through your city you should go!

I saw Joe a few time, I can never hear a mistake... he seems to be as flawless a player as there is. I've not see him in a hwile though, what is that in the second pic there, he's not playing an Ibby there?

I know...I never heard a wrong note either....it's amazing.
He was playing a Dean when he played with Leslie West...West's whole show was Dean sponsored (including the shirt on his tech's back!)...I dunno how that would fly with Joe's Ibanez sponsor, though....!
Update: I did a search on the JSX just now, and found a post where someone saw Satch live and he had his amps on the clean channel all night. I saw the same thing...I wonder if he actually doesn't like the distorted tone of the JSX, or what? Very wierd. If you're gonna play pedals through a clean amp, why not get a Hiwatt or something like Gilmour?

More often than not, the heads that are on stage are just for show with the real stuff being in a rack at the side of the stage. Same thing with EVH's rig, his "on stage" amps appeared to be on the 3rd channel all night....they're just for show and the real stuff is at the side. Same thing with Whitesnake, FWIW.

That's crazy. I wonder if he even likes his JSX dirty channel?
BTW, Leslie West is a BIG dude!

I saw the show at the Keswick in PA and it was hampered by a totally useless sound system/bad mix. All bass drum with a little guitar on top. I thought West did a sort of cursory 40 min set, - I saw him about a year ago and it was a much better show. Lindsey Buckingham played the same place the night before, with the same bad sound.

Saw Satch and Leslie in Toronto last week...Both were great but I have to say Joe's tone wasn't spectacular...I don't get why he uses two delays for ambience when the sound was just bouncing off of the walls like crazy. Sounded like he was playing in a huge cavern and you couldn't hear any real distinction between the notes when he was playing fast at times...Turned to mush. The Satchurator isn't that impressive...I liked his Marshall tone with a DS-1 much better. He also sounds a lot better at outdoor venues. Leslie West's tone on the other hand...WOW! Full and chunky, very present in the mix. It was just a huge balls out rock sound coming out of those Budda's. He's gotta get rid of the loser bass player that makes his hair spin like a helicopter as if he's in a death metal band. Good grief...

I agree on that bass player, I think he was from Scorpion. He did some stupid trick of playing from the top side of the neck a few times but fortunately, with all of West's noodling between songs, he didn't play all the much.

Satch is playing one of the Leslie West Dean Soltero models in that pic.

I thought Leslie West was great in the mix, but I found his Buddas too trebbly...but maybe that was just where I was sitting or my ear. Satch didn't sound too delay heavy, but I did notice that his rhythm guy was almost non-existant in the mix....which was too bad. I agree on Leslie West's bass player....too much hair swinging! A few more pics....

I have seen Satch probably a dozen times since the Surfin tour, I'll probably check this one out as well. I believe they are at the House of Blues here in San Diego next month.

Sweet...sounds like you better access than I did! I wonder what that Vox wah is? A prototype of something?
I agree about Mountain's drummer....that guy was a trip. I never got a stick, though...but I did get one of Stu's bass picks.
Mountain's drummer is Corky Laing, the original Mountain drummer. He's been doing that stick schtick forever! Great tho that he's still at it, he still sounds great (I saw them a few years back). I wonder who the bass guy was? It wasn't Ritchie Scarlett? I can't see him swinging hair around, he doesn't have enough, lol......
I'd like to hear Leslie with the new Buddda's! For the longest time he'd use the Marshall's just for stage and what the house was getting was mostly a Zoom, I forget which. He used to do something like that in the 80's with a Rockman, but he was miking the amps then......

That's funny about Laing...he looked like he'd been doing that for a while. He also looks like Art Garfunkle...but that's another issue!
Just did some research; the bassist is Rev Jones...he's the bassist from the Michael Schenker group.

Great shot...thanks!
That's actually alot more minimalist than I would have expected. Anyone have any guesses about what's between the Satchurator and the Boss pedal?

I believe thats his new delay pedal prototype
I was at the show that night in NYC too...and from the looks of your pics I was sitting right in front of you!!
I had a great time as I went to the Meet / Greet before and had my axe signed.
I thought Leslie was cool...used an effect sounded much like a POG ( with a setting that sounded like Joes intro to SUper Colossal) almost whole night though (I guess to double his sound and fill the mix)....but it gets old sounding quick. His drummer was cracking drum sticks on command and pointing where he wanted pieces to shoot to....had pretty good aim.
From where I was, I thought Joe was way too low in the mix....bass was cranking and Joe wasnt cutting like Id like to hear at all.....rhythm guitar was very buried as well. Sound guy must have been a bassist...lol.
Had a great time though....we were sitting right where picks flying.....got hit with at least three picks from Stu/ second guitar player

It's called the Time Machine. Joe told me after the show it will be out in January. Not sure if he meant it'll be announced then, or if it's ready for production. It'll be interesting to see what it's all about. Also, you were saying Joe wasn't cutting through...found the same thing in Toronto. I think if he went back to using amp distortion his tone would be much better and he would easily cut through the mix IMO.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the great reviews of the show! The budda's are a leslie and my ideas and suggestion to budda. @ the DC show I just got leslie in to the dirty channel of the heads and we were still trying everything out on the heads. They might have been on the trebbly side, we were still making adjustments on everything, It was the 2nd night off the new set up. It not easy trying to get the big man to try new things. The tour went great and looking to be busy next year.
Joe uses 2 of the 3 heads on stage and only goes into the clean channel on them.
Rev (the new bass player) has given leslie a whole new life and made leslie VERY happy on stage, I don't think he's going anywhere.
If you guy want to know anything else just drop me a post.
Thanks,
Kory

I was at the San Diego show and Leslies sound was killer. Thick, chunking, juicy, and harmonically rich. Just killing actually. During the jams with Satch and later the amazing Stevie Salas, his tone rose above it all.

Hey Kory...are you Leslie's guitar tech? If so, rock on! :BEER
That's a sweet gig, and he's a great showman and guitarist! Do you know if Budda is selling or planning on selling these amps? What are the specs?
Also, do you know if Leslie plans on hitting DC with a headline show in the coming year? His show with Satch was too short!
Thanks!

I was talking with them about the heads, Nothing is in the work as far as I know. We are going to be headlining a tour mid-year next year but dates nor locations have been said. I agree, it was way to short, we all got him to start doing some West, Bruce, and Lang stuff.

Agreed! Try and convince Leslie to play at least one night at the State Theater in DC again...I'd love to see a full-lenght show! His Dylan cover of "Blowin' in the Wind" was really great.
Does he use any dirt pedals into that new rig, or is it all amp?

We have a Tubescreamer and a OCD in front of the head, but He use's them for more pushing a solo and give a little more dirt in the clean channel. It's mostly dirty channel now.
