View Full Version : Nels Cline on the Devi Ever White Spider

Just bought one of these. Clips sounded good and the Nels Cline commentary on the pedal intrigued me.
"The White Spider is a two-tiered, ornery yet totally classic screaming fuzzbox that has massive gain without sacrificing either scrumptious or supremely lacerating tones. It goes from 60s psychedelia damage to Stooges-esque plundersquall in the blink of an eye. Tell me that you can live without a White Spider! Once again, Devi Ever has created a Pandora's box of sonic pandemonium that inspires mayhem and madness, simultaneously poetic and perverse. Kudos and huzzahs!" - nels

I like the top (new) artwork better but I got a hot deal on one with the older artwork and hell you don't play the looks of the pedal.

Sorry, but that sounded like crap. I'll stick with my London Fuzz thanks.

nothing wrong with the old artwork -- it's probably more discernable from five feet away

CocoTone, I've heard your stuff and you are an awesome guitar player with great tone, but it's pretty F'n obvious that you and the original poster want completely different sounds out of a fuzz box.
To me the pedal sounds great and would work perfect with my band, but it's definitely not the right thing for most blues/rock guys. That's probably also part of the reason why Nels likes it so much.

No doubt. I do love fuzz, but I also like to be able to identify the guitar being used. No slight on the user was intended.

Wow, I had to keep checking if my internet connection was constantly buffering because that pedal sounds like it is dieing or broken (splat, silence, crrrk, fizz, silence, garble).
That would be painful at volume. I couldn't even make it through the entire clip.

Devi's pedals are crazy, I have a Shoegazer and it is one loud gnarly SOB, but it sounds amazing.

Devi used to record her fuzzes direct (or through some really crappy
practice amp like vox pathfinder) into the computer. Not the best choice
IMHO, because it does make people turn away - but you can still get
an idea of the pedal's character.
Through any decent modeling or cranked tube amp, be prepared
to be floored by the sound. Awesome pedals.

It says on her site only 20~30 of these were built in 2007. That's darn few compared to the numbers some of the others have attained.
I've never been enthralled with any sounds I've heard on her site but Nels Cline has made many records I enjoy. I trust this pedal sounds 100X better than that demo I just hurled from.
Congrats on acquiring a pedal you enjoy! I like the older artwork too. The knobs you chose suit the pedal much better.

out of all the devi ever pedals, this one sounds most organic to me. i like it a lot, actually. and nels cline's tech talk blog is great.

Yeah it is capable of a far greater range of sounds than were deployed in the demo.
I like it quite a bit.

Hah! The online dealer I bought my (new) TrulyBeautifulDisaster from assured me it was in perfect working order, but I knew right away there was something wrong because
it sounded like an ordinary fuzz
albeit, a spitty, gnarly, grated & gated fuzz, but nonetheless, a fuzz.
She had it back to me in no time w/a little note saying it was good as new - and, sure enough, as soon as I plugged in, I was meet with a wall of noise, that got LOUDER when I turned down the guitar's volume..
..and UP in pitch when I rolled back the tone pot.
Perfect!
But not the kind of pedal you'd use for, say, a tune off the 'Beano' album, or a Freddy King instrumental.
In fact, I don't play much guitar when using the TBD, my hands being to busy working the electric eye, the gate switch and the knobs of whatever pedal I've got plugged into the loop.
Plenty of great fuzz designers out there, but only one Devi Ever

there is definitely only one devi ever!
I thought those clips, albeit somewhat crude and out of tune do demonstrate the unique tones these pedals are capable of.
As mentioned above in this thread, when you have one of these pedals plugged into an amp they can be devastating.
They can make your amp sound like it's blowing up/broken/freak out the sound guy and that can actually be really cool.

Yeah....I was interested in the Durham Crazy Horse.....but when I ordered one I realized that I could get pretty much the same thing from my White Spider or my White spider in conjunction with my other overdrive and fuzz pedals.

That one really interests me too, but being poor&broke, I went w/a 99 buck Tech21 pedal instead, based on a demo done by Henry Kaiser.
Cool enough, but I sure can't get the same noises as Hank does. With extreme gear, I've really got to create my own reference points for the best results

Yes...I a/b'd.....and just couldn't justify keeping it....I couldn't dial in much that I couldn't already get with my White Spider, Interstellar Overdriver, and Coopersonic Tube Overdrive in various combinations.
The White Spider has a great deal of range....though much of that range might be unuseable for many people.
It seems like a great deal of the mojo of the Crazy Horse comes from a fuzz pushed by an overdrive.....much of what could be gotten with the voltage starve on the crazy horse was similar to changes in the texture knob on the White Spider.
I'm not saying that my combo could get virtually every tone possible on the Crazy Horse.....but It was close enough that I could see no use for the Horse for me.

As much as I dig weirdness, I never got a grip on my Soda Meiser. Either odd dry transistory 60s broken speaker fuzz or total meltdown crapout wackiness. Interesting approaches to sounds, I must admit

Yeah I keep going back and forth on the White Spider. It is pretty noisy on most settings and has a huge range of mostly unuseable sounds...but it has some great sounds, too.
Right now it is a keeper.

I am finding that my favorite tones out of this box are with both the TP and 05 sides both engaged..... low gain....with variations created by different combinations of the pickups for slight variety with the guitar volume dialed way back for all pup settings
I am getting tones that remind me a great deal of late 70's and early 80's post-punk. New Order, Joy Division, Gang of Four, PiL, etc.
Listen to "Temptation" or "Everything's Gone Green" by New Order to get an idea of what this particular setting sounds like. Great for rhythm guitar. On the knifes edge between clean and distorted....biting.....bass is cut quite a bit.....kind of a thin sound....but the right kind of thin sound.
I'm not finding all that much for the really compressed distorted tones this thing can get but I keep coming back to my favorite "Post-Punk Rhythm Guitar Tone".

Maybe it's just me, but it seems that almost all Devi Ever pedals sound the same.
And I like the old artwork better!

Sold the Spider about a year ago. Its interesting to revisit these threads to see how my point of view has changed. I've pretty much purged all effects and have been playing with amp reverb and some ocassional amp trem.....and playing drums far more than guitar.

I didn't know there were so few of these made. I tried one a couple of years ago at Moog in Montreal and I thought it was the best sounding of the Devi Ever pedals(I tried just about all of them they had in stock). I should have bought it.
