I'm launching a new line of amplifiers very soon, but all the talk about a logo now has me questioning the name. So let me know what you think!
The amps will all be single channel with power scaling and an effects loop. Pricing will range from $1300 to $1800. The models will be:
American Voiced
A 20W 6V6 amp that is kinda like a hot-rodded '65 Deluxe with tight bass and a creamy overdrive. It's basically everything the DRRI wishes it was and more.
A 40W 6L6 amp that is something like a '65 Super. It's exactly the same circuit as the 20W amp, but with 6L6s. Where the 20W is pretty dirty, this one has tons of clean headroom.
British Voiced
A 15W EL84 amp that is hard to describe. This is a circuit I designed for and licensed to a now defunct amp company. It sounds so good, I can't let it die. It is very chimey and harmonically complex, but goes into a cool compressed overdrive when pushed.
A 35W KT66 amp that is rougly the same circuit as the 15W. It sounds kind of like the best beer you've ever enjoyed.
Modern Voiced
A 22W 6V6 amp that is absolutely bone crushing. This one has a great master volume instead of power scaling. It's brutal. It's also clean when you plug into the low input (which skips the 1st triode). You can essentially choose between having 4 and 5 gain stages. It is a very versatile amp. This amp is somewhat inspired by an amp I'm working on for Warren Haynes, but without all the bells and whistles his will have.
A 50W 6L6 version of the above.

I would have to hear them all be fore choosing, especially the British voiced. Send them to me for review. I will then have a better grasp on them...............Hey, I had to try.:rotflmao

you need to pick a name that has wide spread familiarity to it. None Of the above has that.

I voted for 6th Street but it's not a good name. It gets tied on the end of my tongue when I say it.
I like 1st Avenue, wait, that's a candy bar. OK, maybe Payday, oh shit, that's another candy bar...

Urge-too desperate, too metal maybe?
Storyville- too Gingerbread, too much like Yorkville
6th St sounds best of the three IMO. You may want to still explore other avenues(no pun intended)for names though...

I voted for Storyville, cuz it the best of the 3 options given. The name on your amps is important, but not nearly as important as how they sound, & how well they're made. That said, can you be more specific about the 6v6 amps above? ^
Tube or SS recto, cathode or fixed bias, tube compliment, control layout, heads or combos, speaker taps, low volume performance, any other special features, yada yada yada?

I voted for 6th Street, but i agree it's not the greatest---not bad, makes me think of Austin but i don't know if the connection would be easy to grasp for everyone.
Urge sounds like needing to use the restroom, Storyville sounds like Yorkville and a bit too twink-y.
Sorry if i'm too blunt with my thoughts but i really am trying to help---i'd like to demo some of your new amps if possible sometime----i had the room next to you guys (Cat 5) at an Austin Ampfest last yr----i had some of my Hiwatt clones down there....................gldtp99

Keep the opinions coming guys!
6th Street came to mind because I spent 9 years gigging in and around Austin. Of course, 6th is the center of the music scene there.
Storyville came to mind because I was recently there. For those who don't know, Storyville is New Orleans' red light disctrict and is named after a legislator named Story.
I just thought URGE was cool until people brought up the BM thing.
Cobra,
The 6V6 amp is tube rectified with a 5AR4. Honestly, in an amp that draws so little current, most people can't tell the difference between a 5AR4 and Ultra Fast Solid State. I imagine a double blind test would show results of 50/50.
Tubes are 1 12AX7, 1 12AT7, 2 6V6, 1 5AR4. Controls are Volume, Treble, Middle, Bass, Brilliance, Voltage. Heads and combos. Heads have 4/8/16 taps. I'm not sure what you mean by low volume performance. It sounds great at any volume and it eats pedals. I've had it out to local blues jams, and it stays on stage all night every time.
I chose Urge because it's short and easy enough to remember. I understand your sentiment for 6th street but are you looking for a catchy name for your amp or a walk down memory lane for yourself? A select group will know it but you have to think nation wide. Short and catchy gets my vote.

I choose 6th street. Urge...eh. Storyville makes me think of the band. Good band though.

Storyville sounds the most boutique to me.
I would be impressed if someone told me they were playing a Storyville, even if I didn't know what it was.
Urge to me although easy to remember, just reminds me of ENGL or KRANK or any other metal amp...and it doesn't sound like that's what you want to lump yourself into.
I voted 6th http://www.thegearpage.net/board/images/icons/icon10.gif
And I think you should send ME on before CareTaker.........:rotflmao

I think nothing has the appeal of the S2 name. Why go after a new name when people are still discovering the S2 product? The last thing you need to diversify is your company name.

I pulled this together in illustrator for you. I am sure a paid graphics shop could do even better.
I agree.
I prefer S2 Amps to any of the options. Is there a reason not to use it?

I think I need some shiny new humbuckers with which to record all these sound clips. So I'll just take one set of everything please!

I voted for 6th Street, but I agree with the other posters.
Another ill/ps job for you.

Interesting.
Here's my reasoning on why I'm not using s2 Amps. s2 is a parts, repair, mods company as well as a company that designs amplifiers and licenses them to other amp companies (obviously I can't say who). I think if I release a line of amp under the s2 badge, they will get buried in the parts and repair business and might not be taken seriously.
Would you seriously think about buying a new Mojotone amp if they had one?

Don't know..6th maybe?
The designs semm great, especially the 22 watts gain beast..now..what about a KT88 gain beast?!?

Well since my band's name is 6th Street Rhythm and Blues Review, I'd be happy to be an endorser.

BTW, I've heard both Tab and Thackery recently playing through your Cat 5 amps and they sounded smokingly good.

I realize I'm quite a bit late on this thread, but what the heck.
Maybe you've already picked a name, I don't know. But, out of the 3 choices- Urge sounded the best. Its quick and to the point. Since I'm throwing out opinions, might as well give another name not mentioned... how about HUBRIS amps... taken from your location info of course.

I'm sure you've heard that one before.
Of the 3 I like Urge.

I'm not feeling any of these names....maybe you should continue brainstorming.
What's your last name?

I got it!
Call your amp line "ELEVEN". Instantly recognizable, and would make a great logo with the right design.
Oh man that's gold! PM sent on where to send my royalty checks.

I think 6th Street is a great name..
personally.. I'd still own my Budda and Valvetech amplifiers if the names were different.. as I'm guessing their reps and amps would still sound great because of the people involved in making them.
I don't think S2 is a better name at all, but think it would work fine... but I understand wanting to differentiate it from the other part of the business. It might confuse a few people and you are right to not want that.
