I know phantom power is used to power the condenser mics that I have.

Q: Does it hurt a dynamic mic (Shure SM57 or the like) if it also gets connected to phantom power?

I'm looking at a small mixer unit that sends phantom power to all the mics that plug into it, and was wondering if it affects the dynamic mics. The salesdood wasn't sure if it did or not. (Typical GC!!!)

Thanks -

Nope. Won't hurt 'em one bit! I believe it can damage certain ribbon mics if I'm not mistaken though... but don't quote me on that.

Definitely. But Royer has one that is phantom powered. I think they have some kind of protection built into their other ribbon mics but, as you said, don't quote me on that.

The reporters are really going to be disappointed!

UP, AP, Gerogia. ANONYMOUS MUSICIAN DECLARES PHANTOM POWER TO BE OK FOR SOME RIBBON MICS! "Phantom Power may be ok for some ribbon mics," said a musician who would not allow his name to be used.

If they get even that much right I'd be the luckiest man ever interviewed.

Actually that musician was SEVERELY misquoted... What he actually said was, "The Phantom Menace may be OK for some movie enthusiasts..." ;)

phantom power will not hurt dynamic mics. most ribbon mics will be fried by phantom power, only the new royers have protection.
