Got this years grammy gig here in central Europe!!!!!! :dudeGreat! killer gig, lots of money...but........

For my last TV stint I needed a huge board and about 20 guitars - this years grammy ceremony will feature almost every style of music imaginable - nu-rock, pop, classical, country, metal, folk, hip hop etc etc....

After changing pedalboards around on a daily basis to suit unplugged, blues, old school rock, metal, country, Irish, I really don't know if it isn't worth jacking it all in and using a bloody line 6 or sumting.....
I reckon I must be getting old.:hide.
I always seem to get the mammoth sessions and always want to impress by having the largest amount of period correct equipment, but man - is it really worth it????
I think it is, but at this years show, we not only have to play backing for the nominees and artists, but we have to do all the jingles and TV show themes when the guest presenters take to the stage, the director insists on having everything live and authentic).
Here's the setup for a 2 month session for live TV from march this year:

I need to add something like this for acoustics and midi:

Plus a shitload of mandolins, 12s and oddly tuned acoustics, not to mention 3 types of backline and 7 strings etc.

Do any of you guys ever handle similar stuff, and if so - where do you draw the line???? (psycologicaly and physicaly)

Would really love some feedback, got no damn contact with guitarists on the upper end of the food chain over here so TGP is always the first port of call.

I'm no pro but if I needed to cover all that material on the fly I would look into at least SOME modeling to cut down on what I needed to bring, setup and switch between.

For guitars I would look into a Godin XTsa, LGX-sa or LGXT. These are solid body electrics with piezo bridges for acoustic tones and the SA models are synth compatible.

There's also the Parker nitefly electric/piezo guitars and the line6 variax line of moddeling guitars.

For multi amps and multi-FX you might want to take a hard look at the fractal audio AXE-FX which is a rackmount modeller which is quite a step up from the Line 6 junk.

Good luck with the gig.

You are in a unique position of covering every sound ever made (this year) and you must be prepared. It looks like you took the time to do it right. If it works for you, if you feel like you are "making it look easy" then great.
For me that would be an ass-ache, but you are getting paid for it, so well done.

My 4 magicstomps usually take care of all moddeling (preamp sims into two VC30 stacks in stereo). Might look into a switching system to switch between boards at least. We've got three different stages to play on, plus an outdoor opener so it looks like I'm gonna have to use multiple boards/setups anyway.
Lolaviola, you're dead right about covering all the latest sounds. really looking forward to the White stripes type intros :bkw
It's a dream gig, but a short one. Donning a ricky 12 string to play 'i'll be there for you' through an ac30 when Jenifer Anniston comes on for 8 bars just wouldn't be right on a Pacifica through a tranny Marshall for example.....
Do most of you session guys just bluff it????

I would do everything with a rack, with a triaxis pre-amp for all the gain sound, a g -major (for mods), and lexicorn for reverbs and delays. I also would take some pedals (mainly compressor, a few ods, maybe a rat/muff and choice fx (e.g. auto wah/phase90 etc). Also i would have a pedal board in mono for country and stuff which didnt invole clean cut switching (if ya get me!).

just my way

don't bluff a thing, man. . . . . give the best you've got with what you've got. that's being a pro. give it from your guts all the time . . . i think you've done an admirable job setting up things. . . but you're probably just in need of a rest/vacation. . . . . a long swim or a bike ride and an excellent sleep. meanwhile, with THAT many guitars to tote around. . . . i'd take a deep look into the axe fx. . . who needs all that board maintenance if IF IF you don't have to do it b/c it's all in one box????

hmmm.... guess I am being a bit of a scardy cat. One LA session guy commented on the fact that he doesn't use half the gear I do for authenticity, which is cool I suppose.
No point scaling down just because I'm getting older - I do that at my tele - cable - AC30 blues gigs!!!
I'll give a young pup a job as a technician and just get on with the job as authentically as possible methinks.
