...and it makes me want to cry that he lost the desire to write songs like those. Look at the people who keep plugging away...Elton John/Taupin, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, REM, U2... There are lots of great artists, but few who keep the work ethic up over a lifetime.

Check out Richard Rodgers some time. He had almost that many complete musicals and about 2000 songs.

yea he will never be topped in our lifetimes - he was the best

A fantastic achievement but still a long way behind Bob Dylan.

He also wrote "I can't help it" recorded by Micheal Jackson

excerpt from Wikipedia re his early 80's activity:
He was also featured in Chaka Khan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaka_Khan)'s cover of Prince (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_(musician))'s "I Feel For You (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Feel_For_You)", alongside Melle Mel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melle_Mel), playing his signature harmonica, which was a huge hit. In roughly the same period he was also featured on harmonica on Eurythmics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurythmics)' single, "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There_Must_Be_an_Angel_(Playing_with_My_Heart))" and Elton John (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elton_John)'s "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Guess_That%27s_Why_They_Call_It_The_Blues)", both huge hits

GOLDEN LADY

no -its not and that is a great song.

for the average pro musician that would be the "song of a lifetime"
right there.

but for stevie it was just one song in a long career.

Billy Joel is another songwriter with an unbelievable number of great songs to his credit. Not many musicians can say their last album was as strong as their first was over twenty years earlier; he's one of them.

..and five major albums-everything from "Music of My Mind" through "Songs in the Key of Life",at least IMHO.

Superstition is an annoying riff, and I hate that Clavinova sound.

I'm tired of cover bands playing it.

[end of rant]

he's very talented and has a great voice though.

I would say that only half of the original list qualify as "major" songs (songs that had a widespread impact, if only via popularity) but, even at that, I don't see how Dylan touches Stevie by that measure. Or am I missing the point? -E

"All Is Fair In Love" must be on that list.

He also wrote "Tell Me Something Good" recorded by Rufus and Chaka Kahn.

Stevie is the Whole Package. Sings, plays everything, writes gorgeous stuff, and great showmanship to boot - and all are done at First Tier level. A true talent, I'm glad he's got major recognition in his own lifetime.

I think it was Stevie who said in an interview 30 something years ago that he tries to write at least one song a day. Every day.

From songfacts.com:

One day, Stevie Wonder surprised the band with a song he wanted Rufus to record. Chaka didn't like it and said to him, "Thanks, but no thanks." Wonder wouldn't leave without giving the group SOMETHING. He asked for her birth sign ("Aries-Pisces") and wrote "Tell Me Something Good" on the spot.
Wonder coached Chaka through the song. Chaka Khan: "I started singing the way I would have worked through it... and he said, 'No, no, no, sing it like THIS!" (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for all above)

I was wondering the same thing...

How come "Too High" or "Jesus Children Of America" are not on that list?

Both major songs in my life, plus a "J" song would be covered in the master list.

I did not put that list together.

now that I think of it he may have 100 major songs

what is a major song ?

lets just say that if the song is well regarded 50 years from now,
it is a major song.

(unlike "we built this city on rock and roll" )

that was a hit at the time - but now is regarded as pure crap.

Bob Dylan is great but they day that he can write a song like this and perform it in the same moving fashion that Stevie can, and still can then I'll put him in the same league.
