What HDTV recording options exist besides TiVo

I refuse to pay for Tivo. They make a nice looking box at a reasonable price, but it appears that it won't work unless you fork over 12$ or so a month for the privilige. What alternate OTA HD recording/playback solutions are available? Seems easy. Get a couple of tuners, put'em in a box with a hard drive and away you go. Has TiVo somehow eliminated competition? What am I missing? Computer based seems to have potential, but it looks complicated. What all is anyone else doing?

I use my DVR with Cablevision here in NJ. It records HDTV, but it still costs about the same as Tivo.

I don't know why I waited so long to get the DVR cable box. This thing is great!

media center by m$ worked well for me.
comcast is working with tivo.

Sony makes a pretty nice DVR. Or you can build your own with a PC. Google home made PVR...
