Been married for 2 months and it looks like she's pregnant. We didn't really plan this but are viewing it as an unexpected blessing. So, I'm asking for mojo/prayers from you guys and gals for:
- us to improve our finances and living situation.
- and most importantly -- that the little crumb snatcher is healthy.

thanks!

Kids are great...also life changing, in the very least.
Very challenging to become a parent for the first time.
My advice when your little young'un arrives.
RELAX...THEY'RE TOUGHER THAN YOU BY A LONG SHOT!
If they're fed and changed, and not obviously sick...let them cry a bit.
They learn early on how to wrap mommy and daddy around their tiny little finger.
They also relax and become less cranky if they feel that mom and dad are cool and collected as well as loving.
Seriously...

And congrats!

Congratulations. You'll have a blast. Here's hoping the kid is healthy. Being financially set is nice, but not as important IME.

Oh, and real diapers are great for mopping up beer spills too. :)

I would think that the vast majority of kids are unplanned. Nothing like having to look out for such a vulnerable creature who is always looking to you for the way to behave, as a motivator to start acting like a responsible adult. At least that was my experience. Congrats.

Thanks...actually it's my 2nd and her 3rd... our youngest is 10.

Cloth diapers on the guitar? Oh, do you mean to wash them first?

Our youngest daughter, #3, was TOTALLY unexpected. Doctor said that her being conceived was 1 million to 1! She was quite ill until she was 7 years old - survived leukemia and 5 years of chemotherapy. All during those trying days and months we wondered if her being born was a curse or blessing. Well, 22 years later, she is now a forensic biochemist (just like CSI!) and healthy as can be. So, look for the blessing in your new family situation. It's the greatest thing that will ever happen to you both. Plus, the little tykes are way stronger than you might expect. Congrats!:AOK

6 year old and a 9 year old here. I've been called many things by many people in my time, but being called "Daddy" by my children is the name I'm most fond of. Being a father is the best blessing I've ever had bestowed upon me.:AOK

Both of my kids were unexpected, but I loved the toddler days. The teens, not so much. Now they are grown with kids of their own and I feel justified :D

Yeah, we do. In fact, we'll be expecting you to start making child support payments in about 7.5 months.

not to hijack but where does killing the rabbit tie in with being pregnant? I've heard this before but have always wonbdered what it meant? Is it the same reference tyler is using in Walk this Way? Somebody once told me that early pregnancy tests involved killing a rabbit... I thought it sounded kinda far out.

That has long been my understanding. I doubt they use that test anymore.

I'm with the other guy who posed the rabbit killing question. I don't get it. But then again I also don't get other American sayings like "who's your daddy", "pissing in the park", etc.

I was in an identical situation to you 8 years ago. Quotes I remember from friends and family, all 100% true:
"Its never a *good* time to have a baby"
"My kids are the best thing that ever happened to me"
"You'll find patience you never knew you had"
"Kids are expensive"
"You'll learn to fake sleeping when the baby is crying at 3AM" :)
"The trunk of a car is the best place to change a baby when you're out"
"Family Circus comics are all of a sudden funny"
"Children will seek out the most expensive items in your house and destroy them"
"All of a sudden you'll find things in the wrong places, like old ice cream cones in the glovebox etc."
"You're gonna have to sell that vintage Chevy and get a minivan"

Had to read this a couple times. Subliminaly I read it a Torture instead of Nurture, our third just turned one and I know of what I speak........

Congrats to the OP!

My understanding of the dead rabbit was that the mom to be would urinate in a cup and a rabbit would drink some. If the rabbit lived - no baby. If it died - you're pregnant.

Too lazy to Google to see if that's correct.

Pray for a healthy pregnancy for mom and baby!!

The finances are and always will be the source of stress.
There are happy, healthy families born every day with little or no material possessions.

As soon as I realized and got over that, I enjoyed the hell out of my wife being pregnant and now I have an awesome, beautiful, healthy 6 month old daughter.
If I stayed hung up on finances and kept giving the excuse that we're financially not ready, we would never have gotten pregnant.
Now, we take it as it comes.

Good luck to you and your wife! It's an amazing ride.

Etymology

Before the days of instant pregnancy test, a woman's sample was injected into a rabbit. There were several varieties of tests; one allegedly would kill the rabbit if the pregnancy hormone was present in the sample (most accounts indicate the rabbit was killed and dissected either way.)

I thank everyone for the kind words...unfortunately, we spent about 8 hours in the ER last night and it did not go well -- i.e. we are not pregnant anymore.

It is a common misconception that the injected rabbit would die only if the woman was pregnant. This led to the phrase "the rabbit died" being used as a euphemism for a positive pregnancy test. In fact, all rabbits used for the test died, because they had to be surgically opened in order to examine the ovaries. While it was possible to do this without killing the rabbit, it was generally deemed not worth the trouble and expense.

Your daddy said I took it just a little to far
Youre telling me things but your girlfriend lied
You cant catch me cause the rabbit gone died
