I moved here 3 and a half years ago and really like it. I've talked with My Wife about where We could be as happy. The Midwest and South are too hot and humid for Us. Won't go back to Cali. So where would You Folks recommend in The U.S. and why?

Colorado, Pacific NW, Alaska...or right where I am now.

Here in Wisconsin, while the summers do have the occasional warm and humid days (very occasional in this part of Wisconsin), it is definitely not what I would consider "hot and humid". I've lived in SE Texas, and Atlanta...among other places. THAT is hot and humid. The cost of living is much lower compared to the other three places I listed, and out here in the rural area, it is just magnificent. Great people, lots and lots of room to roam, very slow pace, plenty of things to do outdoors. Honestly, I would hate to leave here. But, if I do...it would only be to one of the three places listed above.

Then again, how you plan to make a living...if you need to do that...is certainly a consideration when choosing a place to live. If you don't have to worry about that, and could go anywhere, then these would be my suggestions.

I really don't plan to move but i thought it would be cool to know what everyone thinks is a cool place to live. I grew up in a small town and always wanted to see other places. That kinda comes back now and then. When i meet people from places i've never been i always ask about their neck of the woods.

Even then. 7 seconds doesn't even allow a decent forearm and wrist workout to help your picking hand.

At least those slow down your fretting hand enough that your picking hand can keep up. :D

I am not so sure about that. I live in Denver and also lived in Twin Falls Idaho. Twin Falls had better weather while I was there. Idaho also had a lot less people which is a huge plus, but then again that depends on what you are looking for. Colorado definitely has better guitar stores though.

If I had to choose between the two, I would pick Idaho. It is a beautiful state and a very peaceful place to live.

I moved from Boise to Colorado Springs and have lived in Denver. We wouldn't have done the move if it involved going back to Denver. I enjoy the weather in Colorado more than Idaho but we do wish that the company had moved us to Fort Collins instead. There is a nice meat packing plant near Fort Collins for you. Just don't move downwind of it. Of course you're used to the sugar beet plant in Nampa but the meat packing plant will make that smell like a Cinnabon.

Actually, that's my suggestion. Have had one eye on Santa Fe for some time. But the wife likes it here, so...

The high desert is ideal for me.

The town I live in, Portland, OR, was the second choice that this thing found. I made a conscious decision to live here. In fact, the first town, Salem, OR is only an hour away.

I'd think of moving to Idaho myself. Where's Nampa? Other likely spots would be somewhere near Astoria Oregon, Southwestern Utah perhaps, Northern Vermont most definitely.

portland, maine. great food, decent weather (near the water) near to just about everything while still being remote. Mainers are cool and lots of music there and cool musicians. That would be my pick.

How about Kennewick, WA? I spent about a year and a half in the tri-cities. Mostly dry, a bit windy in the spring, but other than that it's nice.

Downside: Not many guitar shops I could find.

On the plus side: Lots of water to do water sports on, and TONS of outdoor parks.

Downside: No mountains... (I love the mountains, I live in Utah)

I moved to Idaho from California after living there for 45 years. I like it here.
No place is going to be perfect, I can deal with the things here that tend to rub me the wrong way. More good than bad.

It's a tough time to sell a house up here, but if your renting, I'd look outside of Nampa and see if you can get a place that will let you get to work in a decent time and still give your head a rest. Star is close and it's pretty nice.

OP, how long have you been in Idaho?

To all who live everywhere else, I've found Idaho to me a moderate climate area... four seasons, not too extreme in any of them. No floods, NO EARTHQUAKES (thank you very much), no hurricanes, no tornados.

15 minutes south of me is the desert and the Snake River, just north is beautiful mountain and river country, and from my home office window I can see Bogus Basin, which is one of the largest ski areas in the north west.

Every time I drive by Boise on the freeway I think to myself, "that's so cool, it's the largest city in the state". (compared to San Francisco, it's very tiny)

I moved to Idaho and slowed WAY down. My wife says I drive like an old man! I tell her I'm just chillin'!

I do miss the music stores and having some of the best gear tech's in the country close by. But, what are ya' gonna' do? It's kid raisin' time anyway.

From my own private Idaho...

Have you stopped by John Bolin's shop? Talk about having a gear tech close by.

Do you know him?
Had work done by him?

Or let me ask, have you seen his guitars up close?

Before I say anything I guess I'd like to know how you feel about him. :MMM

I own some of his guitars and visited his shop when I lived in Boise.

DStefani

I guess I should clarify, I found a great guitar tech who actually used to work for John Bolin but left over,.. lets say, "philosophical" differences. He now works out of his house.

Now a good amp tech, hmm not so far. Tried a few, not so good.

As far as Bolin goes, this is a small town in the sense that, not much goes on that doesn't get talked about. When I first moved here I started looking into my gear needs. I don't know the man, but everything that I heard was not too good, and a guitar repair that went bad on a vintage 54 goldtop that I saw first hand was, hmm, "criminal" for lack of a better term.

I've spoke to 3 people that worked for him and with others who have been in the music scene here for a long time and I've yet to hear a good thing about him or his work.

Sounds like you might be the first. Glad to hear it.

Hardly the first if you look at his client list. He came highly recommend to me by others in Boise which is how I first heard of him.

DStefani
10-30-2008, 11:23 AM
Yea, it's toughl to tell when people tell you stuff about certain businesses.
I guess I could say, your the first positive experience I've of heard of first hand.

A client list is only one aspect of a business. Definitely not a "tell all", not for me anyway.

I'm glad it worked out for you.

I'd say I'm tainted though, from what I've seen and heard. I'll just pass.

Actually, I like YOUR neck of the woods. Coeur d'Alene is BEAUTIFUL !

I love Montana & would like to go to Alaska, but not sure where I'd love to live. I'm semi-hermit-like & therefore, fairly flexible, but my wife likes city life :dunno
