I like the lead for Layla, but the rest of the song is kinda boring to me. But that lead sure is fun to play!

Man this is funny as I was just thinking about it the other day per Joe Perry. I love the solo in "Dude Looks Like a Lady" but good lord is that song brutal. Actually I like a lot if his leads and not too many of their songs.

Gerry Rafferty`s Baker Street. Simple but cool. Horrid tune though.

John Mayer's "Waitin' On The World To Change". Not a big fan of the song, but the solo is very melodic & has a cool tone. The solo sounds like it was done entirely on one string, like a cello player would do in certain instances. Don't know this for sure, just sounds like it.

Tears for Fears, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." Killer solo late in the song. Also, quite a few Mister Mister songs had good solos, but the rest sucked. Toto songs too....

TNT "10,000 Lovers" arghh now I have those vocals stuck in my head....what a great guitarist though

Whatever that Journey song is where the chorus is "when the lights go down in the city..." I guess Craig C. is the one soloing. Great simple phrasing that builds to a cool climax. Great cover tune if you have a good crooner and want to look like a guitar hero... :-)

Would that not be Neal Schon? I thought Craig was playing with Starship?
Speaking of which...killer solo on "Jane", but the whole song is good.

"Justicia Tierra Y Libertad" by Mana
God, I hate hate hate hate that band with a passion... their fakeness, their posturing, their crass commercialism.. but that song has some of the best Santana soloing on record. I saw them on TV with their usual guitarist trying to play the song and he just couldn't cut it.

+1........and I'm probably the only other person on the board who knows that song.
I'll add "Oblivious" by Aztec Camera. Roddy Frame is an amazing talent....don't care for that particular track....but his playing is spectacular.

Would that not be Neal Schon? I thought Craig was playing with Starship?Correct on both counts, and the song is Lights. On the live Journey album they segue into another tune called Anything, with a very nice solo during the transition.

+1. I have always wondered how such a great solo got into an 80s pop song like this.

IMO Styx and Journey were bands who has consistently great lead playing, but sometimes overly sappy tunes.
My vote would be for "Anyway You Want it" by Journey. Never liked the tune, but the playing is great.

There's a Donna Summer song, I think it might be 'Bad Girls', that has a killer solo.

Yep. Played through a bunch of that stuff in an 80's pop band (back in the 80's of course). A lot of those players back then were former fusion heads. Def some higher level musicianship.

Ah, the famous EVH guest solo. I used to love that solo, until Wierd Al spoiled it for me with his spoof video, "Eat It." After that I kept looking for Eddie to explode.

Dirty laundry by Don Henley with Joe Walsh and Lukather splitting time. Joe's solo is so OUT. I love it. The song is ...meh.
Lots of zappa but especially Montana. That song is SOOO goofy (even for zappa) but the solo kills.

Haven't read the whole thread, so I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned this yet, but "Midnight at the Oasis" is pretty high on my list...kitschy song, twee vocal, cornball lyrics, and an utterly miraculous and baffling solo from Mr. Amos Garrett.
Back in the days before digital technology I think I actually recorded "Midnight" on cassette and spliced out Garrett's part to make a tape loop that I could play over and over...but I never did figure out that solo!
