Wiring recommendations please...

I have a 2x12 closed back cabinet that I need to load with speakers. I have decided to go with higher wattage speakers and run my marshall @ 16 ohms, but I don't know which wiring scheme would be better, if either. So the choice is 2 - 8 ohm wired in series or 2 - 16 ohm wired in parallel. Are there sonic differences? Are there reliability/safety issues to consider? Can anyone share their experiences and or preferences and why? BTW, the cabinet is a germino - older bluesbreaker style, if that has any bearing.

Thanks for any and all replies. I would like opinions before I buy speakers. Basically my dilemma is which ones to buy - 8 ohm or 16 ohm.

The only way to get the two speakers to act as a 16Ω load is to use two 8Ω speakers. There are slight sonic differences to the two options, mostly personal taste more than anything though. I would get the two 8Ω speakers, which you can wire in series or in parallel (so you have either a 16Ω or a 4Ω load, both of which can be tolerated by a Marshall)
