View Full Version : anyone like Cajun music?
I've been listening to a streaming radio station via iTunes (it's under Radio/Blues in the play lists) called Cajun Fest. Some of these tracks are really excellent and can get under your skin in a hurry :D :AOK
Any Cajun music fans here at TGP?

Oh yeah, it's awesome, like retarded ska/polka. From the heart of Cajun country, I gotta say... love the pay you get when you play cajun/zydeco, hate to listen to it.

This is easily the best thread on the internet right now. TGP talking about Cajun music. I've played my share of Zydeco gigs. At this point I've got a love/hate relationship with that music. It makes me proud to be from Louisiana but it's a little tough to listen to. Thanks for starting this thread!!!

Check out my buddy Dirk Powell with Balfa Tujours!
The Balfa Brothers were my first experience into cajun. If they play accordion it has to have buttons NOT KEYS....
It also has to be traditional. Twin fiddles almost old time. The original recordings of the Balfas really knocked me out!

I am a fan as well. Saw Terance Semmion (spelling?) a couple of years ago and he blew the house away. Zydeco is a high energy happy experience. I can listen for long periods, but some say it is better in small doses, like Hawaiian Slack Key and Surf Music. I love it.

I love Cajun music. I just got back from Festival Acadiens et Creoles in Lafayette, LA a few weeks ago.
Definitely check out Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, especially if you get to see them live. Sam Broussard is an amazing guitar player who stretches the boundaries of what Cajun music is without getting too far afield, but they are all excellent players.
For a more rockin' take on some of that stuff, check out the Bluerunners. They mix in blues, country, and swamp pop in a really cool way. Their CD "Honeyslides" is a great place to start with them. Great songs and grooves, and their a console steel player, Will Golden, really rips.

I grew up with it. My dad was Cajun and listened to his Coonass Music all the time in his workshop. The real deal would be to go see Clifton Chenier or Andrew Cormier and the Rambling Aces at the Rodair Club in Port Arthur Texas back in the late 60s and early 70s. Those old boys had it going on.
