View Full Version : Are you holding gear that you would normally sell?

Are you holding off selling gear that you would normally sell because you're not really using it or whatever other reason, because of the slow economy? I've been trying to sell a Lexicon PCM 70 and it hasn't sold right away. I was thinking of dropping the price to the point where I would be taking a loss, but then I thought, I don't desperately need the money right now. Maybe after this recession is over, it'll sell more quickly and for more money. Now that might be a few years away, but maybe I'll just wait it out. Somethings, like big amps, are different because they take up more space and having that space is sometimes worth it to me. Anyone else in the same position?

At least you accept things are slow. If you're selling it for a good price just keep it for sale. Don't get all upset then raise the price and act like your original price was doing someone a favor, cuz there is probably somebody eyeballin the hell out of it and saving their pesos - even if it has the ugliest 3 prong power cord known to man attached to it. Patience.

In this economy, I've kept it simple - consign it at a store with plenty of foot traffic (or net traffic), and forget it. When it sells it sells - who cares, you're not playing it anyhow, right? Whenever the cash comes, it's a bonus. If you're checking the consignment every 2 seconds maybe it means you need the cash more than you thought, in which case lower the price, it'll sell quicker. That's it!

I'm holding on to an American Deluxe Strat with Rio Grandes, a Reverend Volcano, a Bumbox Lead One, a one-off 5 watt screamer ( voodoo baby )on a custom 2x12 cabinet, an hand wired Eternity, a Fulltone clyde deluxe, a couple of Mad Professor pedals, and a Guild acoustic. They don't eat anything sitting on the shelf and I'm kind of GASed out so I'm in no big hurry. I do try to use them as trade bait from time to time. I'm not after a huge profit, only to break even or a 5%-10% loss. There are some deals to be had at this point in time with more to come. IMHO

I have a Gretsch Silver Jet 57 RI that I'd like to sell to finance a new iMac, but I am afraid to list it for what the VG price guide says it's worth, and also I don't want to sell it for less than book value. It has some excellent additions to it. It has a real Melita bridge (the original space bar bridge is in the case), and it has a cowboy case. These 2 items add around $450 to the value of the guitar alone. I have thought of selling it with the original bridge and a generic case, but it is so cool with all of the extras, imho. IIRC, the current book price for the guitar is around $1800. I have thought of selling the guitar with a generic case , but leaving the bridge as is for $1800, and then selling the case separately, but I still hesitate. Why? I am not 100% sure. I rarely play this guitar. I don't know why, because when I crank it up at a jam, it sounds great. But I have just never bonded with it. I have to say I bought it strictly on looks. And it DOES look cool. It is a good player, and it has fine tone, but I just never go to it, unless I force myself, then I am always happy I did, but then afterwards, it'll just sit in its stand for months. So when I think about selling something to come up with cash for a new Mac, that's the item I own that comes to mind. So far, I have not made any serious attempt to sell it. If the market and economy gets better, I'd likely put it on the block.

I'm holding gear that I'm too lazy to sell. It has nothing to do with external economic conditions! :o

I have 2 high dollar electric guitars that I want to sell, but I'm in no rush to do so, and I don't need the funds.During the past year I have had no problem selling stuff in the emporium under 2k. Stuff 2K and up seems to take longer to move. I'm content to wait another year or two, or 3 if I have to in order to get the most $$$.

I'm in that camp, too. I have a number of things I've meaning to sell (I've even taken pictures!), but haven't bothered to make the eBay ads. Maybe a project for this evening.

It's seems like a market that's increased trade deals - my last few high-end deals have been straight swaps, although that wasn't my original intent. I'd prefer an outright sale on most stuff though, but don't see anything improving in the immediate future..
I really don't like having stuff around that I'm not playing with, so trading at least brings some new gear into the mix.

I'm selling and buying like I normally have done in the past. Similiar to Jon S. reply , economy is not impacting my decision.

I'm trying to sell/trade a guitar right now. Things are moving slowly though. The good thing is that I'm not desperate so I can wait it out.

That's also part of my problem...what's up with that? Used to be, anything I no longer wanted to keep, and directly to ebay it went.

I've been trying to sell a 1995 Japanese Pink Paisley tele and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe all mint condition priced right below blue book and add or best reasonable offer on Craigslist and some folks offer ridiculously lowball offers of less than 50% of price and would rather keep them than give them away.

That's good advice.

Well, if I had the money for a new iMac, I'd likely just keep it. I DO like it, and it IS fairly unique to play. It's just the least played guitar I have, so it's the first choice to sell to finance an iMac.

I have some low-end pieces that I intend to sell for cheap, but it's not the economy that's holding me back. I think I'm just too lazy to make time to go through the "process".

Actually, I think they'd sell pretty well & fast (Ibanez classical + Johnson Dobro), but somehow finding the time to take the photos & run the Craigslist ad seems daunting. Maybe I don't have the strength to put up with the tire kicking yahoos that CL ads draw.

Anyway....no, it's not the economy holding me up.

I've sold a few guitars & amps on Craigslist and got my prices it just seems the last 2 items lately I get these a-holes that want something for nothing and put them in their place in my response.
