I've seen/heard many live performances of Hendrix and some are amazing and some not so much, I think this clip of Hear My Train A Comin' from the Royal Albert Hall is my favorite of them all. Some of the most raw and expressive blues ever played and his tone is amazing.

Hope you enjoy and share any Hendrix performances/clips you dig.

Isn't that "Experience" film of that show ever going to happen?

Ask Eric Burdon, he owns the footage.
Last I heard he and Janie Hendrix don't see eye to eye on the value of the footage.

is there any good hendrix concert footage with good audio that doesn't have all of the indulgent psychodelic visual effects and inane stock footage edited in? the coolest parts of that performance were edited over with visual garbage. i never saw him live, but hendrix is certainly known for his arresting stage presence. wish i could have seen what actually transpired onstage.

man, he really kinda bitch-slapped Mitch there at the begining...although as a creative move it was a good one.

Know what you mean. The remastered Monterey and Woodstock DVDs are pretty good, but I suppose they've been around for a while in one format or other.
I've got the RAH CD bootlegs, and they were good gigs - the version of I Don't Live Today [not sure which performance] is a particular fave of mine - tone is excellent. It would be good to get the RAH film out with decent audio.

I based my whole tone quest for the past 20 years on Albert Hall Exp. tones.
Now I have my own tone, but working toward that roar on "I Don't Live Today"
was a key part of my self-discovery.That tone still gives me chills just hearing it in my head.Saw him up close(front row) 5 times and he never sounded that good.Close though.

I downloaded the whole concert a few years back. One of Jimi's best, definitely, but the visual FX are really annoying. I wonder why the people editing the footage figured that it was a good idea to add these inane effects, how they actually thought it would improve the footage.

Sure did! But that's a man who knew just what he wanted. Yes sir, Mr. Hendrix sir.

Frequently this sort of thing is done to cover up a multitude of sins, like missing or low(er) quality footage. Given the circumstances of this shoot -- certainly on-the-fly, maybe on-the-sly -- it would not be surprising if the FX were just a visual way of getting from point A to point B in the audio track.

Maybe we are talking about different things...but the Albert Hall show was supposed to be used in a film called Experience which was definitely NOT an "on the sly thing"...for various reasons it was never completed commercially but the live recording was used in a zillion different releases, starting with two LPs in separate releases "Experience" and not too long ago in a full CD given away with a british newspaper edition. Some of the tunes are a bit ragged like "Smashing of Amps" and tunes that are jams with Chris Wood and other Traffic guys, but some of the songs totally kill, including much dissed Noel's bass playing.

00:10 - 00:15, he motions and grimaces at Mitch to stop playing while he plays the intro.

The concert parts aren't from the Royal Albert Hall guys. If you look at the policeman at the side of the stage when the clip starts it is an American uniform. There is a clip I have seen of this whole performance without the docu stuff, just the stage and audience and there are several more US police to be seen. The Albert Hall is much bigger with I think 3 tiers of stalls surriunding the stage.

Psychedelic effects in 1969? Who'd have thunk it? Hell, it's fortunate that we even see any playing at all. Maybe you had to be there, but they sure weren't inane in their time...well, OK maybe they were inane, but nobody thought so ;).
This tune was such a great vehicle for him. Maybe my all time favorite performance of his is the Berkeley version from the old Rainbow Bridge release. Between that and the San Diego Red House from In the West.

I don't think that's an American cop in uniform you see at the beginning.

I would have much rather seen video of him playing than all that other artzy crap.
Were those the concerts where all the great Brit slingers were at and couldn't flippin' believe it?
Like Clapton, Page and Townshend? They thought their careers were over after they saw Hendrix.
The audio was pretty good for a recording of that vintage though.

the video of this is over at Traders den, and its fantastic. I just watched it with my 7 year old boy a few days ago and he (and I) was blown away.
I definitely suggest grabbing it. There really aren't many annoying special effects, matter a fact I can only recall one song having what looks like a sparkler superimposed over Jimi. Its dumb, but short lived for sure.
and it is definitely not in America. Besides the fact that the Traders den is pretty uptight about lineage on posts, you can tell just by looking at the audience :D.

I think that was a few years earlier in some of the London clubs, before Monterey...

That was fricken awesome! I recall seeing a video that looked like it was from that same show where they had a sparkler in the middle of the screen for a good portion of the song that was a pretty annoying. As long as they're not messing with the audio, I guess I shouldn't really complain though. I love the 'cluck' at 6:50.

Clapton's autobiography has a great story about that in it...
actually the whole thing is a great read, well worth it.
