Ok, so I'm embarrased to say that I've never really though too much about this.
In "All Along the Watchtower", after the "slide" solo (and "hey") what is that?
Is that a Uni-Vibe?
I've always kind of just assumed it was a wah pedal - again, I hadn't ever really though too much about it. What is it?
Thanks,
Steve

It's the wah and fantastic use of it as well.

Do you really need to call yourself "stupid and idiotic"?
Idiots are that way because they never ask questions.
That is one of the most sublime uses of wah ever recorded.
The genius of Jimi.
Hey the fact you're on the gear page means you obviously are the product of superior genes and breeding and etc.:AOK

I agree - it's a great question.

I heard the wah was "played" by the engineer.......
Anyone else ever hear that before?

I hear its just that roger mayer specifically tuned his wah for that song.

It's a terrific question!
The closest thing it sounds like is an echo into a wah (rather than the usual wah into echo).
Huge envelope, so if it is a wah, sounds like the recorded track, with echo, got fed into the wah and then into the board.

I heard he built it and actuated it......I have two Roger Meyer Vision wahs!
Love 'em!

Yes, there's definitely no need for that. Asking questions is how people learn things. It's those that never ask any or those that come down on others for asking them that I wonder about. ;)

Only giving stupid, Idiotic answers is allowed on a forum, using Hendrix content to pull us in is slimmy as well
LOL

Thanks to all of you.
Ii really just thought it was simply too "sublime" as this response put it to be a wah :-)
It's always on the beat, so I felt it to be mechanically operated (or by an LFO, etc.).
Ok, now the burning question - why can I never get a wah that sounds that good! (don't tell me which ones to buy, because right now, buying a single pick is a major financial decision).
Thanks to everyone.

I've wondered how he got that octave during the slide part. You can't hold 2 slides an octave apart, it does not sound like a double track, it's not a trem bar...its probably been mentioned in interviews...anyone?

what I love about TGP - getting educated answers and intelligent guesses from guys that are way better / experienced w tech side than me.!
thanks!
I always assumed it was a wah pedal w echo, but, playing back in the day without an echo .... never bothered to find out - I just play the wah part
has anyone tried to replicate it asis?
btw - great question !

Have you heard Hendrix do this song live? He was able to replicate this solo note for note, with poetic license, on the stage too.

poetic license true
but he never replicated that wah + echo effect. with today's tech he probably would have.

I can pull that sound by running my delay pedal into my wah. I'm using a Buddy Guy wah and a Carbon Copy delay. I wish I had a way to record it and post it but, I have no idea how to do that. Try it!

Not only that he played the lead parts with a Gibson Flying V no less.

I didnt think it was humanly possible until I saw Jimi do it on the Isle of Wight version.

he used the vibrato rod to do it in Isle of Wight , and other concerts
saw him do it several times.
sometimes on an octave
sometimes a stacked thirds chord moved up and down

When Jimi played Seattle the second time, word was that the local musicians union f*cked with him and woudn't allow him to use the echoplex live... they had some clause about not being able to use tape to replace another musician, blah blah.
I agree that solo is definitely one of his very best. I'm also partial to the short but very beautiful solo on May This Be Love (AKA "Waterfall") from the first album.

I had heard that too but theres no documented proof that Jimi ever used an Echoplex live that I know of. Also while were on the subject of Jimi's magic hands at work; on the Winterland version of Little Wing, the outro solo(same as Royal Albert Hall 1969) it sounds like he's got a Leslie cabinet on. Its actually him manipulating flutter sounds rocking his Vox wah back and forth(he also does this at the end of Woodstock's Star Spangled Banner and countless other shows). He was a musical genius and though its been overstated - a man way ahead of his time.

Listen to the records he did with Curtis Knight.Holy crap! The wah sounds on a couple of those songs are as vocal sounding as ever. There's actually a few gems on those records.Been a long time since I heard them.I'll have to dig into my collection.Hmmmm.

The George's club, NJ show he's on fire! Great version of Drivin' South and BB King's Sweet Little Angel. I have some of the set saved in my youtube favorites. I think he used a Duo Sonic and cranked Twin its got that robust meaty tone ala 6L6GC. The early Experience Paris, Olympia show the clean tone has alot of headroom too no fuzz on Killin Floor or Hey Joe.
He used a Mosrite Fuzzrite I believe on those studio recordings.
