View Full Version : Stupid Turntable Question

I'm about to upgrade my turntable (to a vintage Dual 1219, hopefully), so I figure I'd better start learning certain things.
There is a toggle to the front right of the platter that has 2 positions - 6* (degrees) and 12* (degrees, I think). What is it and what does it do?
Oh and excuse my ignorance.

Nver mind. It's inches, not degrees. See, I told you it was stupid. Man, I need to get new glasses. The thing is, I know what 12 inch records are, but I always thought 45's were a different size than 6 inches. Well, I'm assuming that I'm wrong about that too.
I think what I really need is a "turntable-speak" website. And some new glasses.

That's what I thought. Where do they get 6" from then?
Now I need to figure out what is a reasonable price to pay for a Dual 1219 (or 1218) or possibly a 1229Q.
I actually see one for $130 in excellent condition (w/ a Shure 70BX cartridge - My first choice would be an M91). I might have to answer that one. It looks really clean.

If your serious about vinyl a belt drive is the way to go...I recently went that way and hear the difference!I'm becoming an audiophile:cool:

I've got Direct Drive The motor is the same used by the Library of congress to transcribe their collection.
Belt drive at the highest level can be better then DD approaching 10K but then we are talking 20k belt turntables with 7k arms and 5k cartridges
I play Records and Guitar.
For the 12K I was going to replace my 30 year old tube amp Hi-Fi system with I bought a piano, drums, a bass, a few nice guitars, two TopHat amps and a great Aguilar Bass amp with a 4x10 cab for my kid to start a band and keep him home and rocking
Vintage consumer market its a matter of preference and maintainence My DDTT is thirty years old and gets 4 - 5 hours of play a day or more. When your lucky you might find one mint for $500 or new for seven or eight as NOS overstock found
