I would like to hear some opinions regarding my next move for speakers. Two different amps are gonna need to be sorted out.
The Amps:
Class A 30watt, no reverb - I have been using a 3 X 10" cab, but I think I am done with 10's. The head has taps for 2.6, 8 & 16 Ohms
80 watt Tweed - floating baffle 2 x 12" combo. 4 Ohms.
Also:
I have an open-back 4 x 12" cabinet that currently has 2 G12h30's & 2 reissue Greenbacks all 16 ohm.
If you want to make recommendations without reading further ( my history with speakers ), skip the rest of this and let's hear it! Otherwise, plow forth and join my confusing trip!
My goal is to use the Tweed for cleanish, and the 30 for Lead stuff. I use the guitar volume a lot - as well as pedals for gain. I recently tried my 30 watter with 4 Celestion Blues in the exact same cab as mine and was blown away. It may be kinda loud for my application, but oh, what a sound. The Tweed originally had two Celestion 75's ( the older ones with the big black square on the back ) but I blew one, then the other. Sounded great when I still played Strat all the time & still liked my TS 808 & Ts9 together. For the last 8 or so years, I have been using the first version paper cone Tone Tubbies. Pretty good, but I am thinking that I might be better served with with something that can handle the low end and lower mids more evenly.
I have tried all 4 Celestions in the 4 12 cab ( together AND just in pairs ), but none are flattering. Especially with the 30 watter, they get whizzy when turned up. The G12h30's sound "hard" to me - not very pleasant.
I think that slightly less efficient speakers that can handle volume is my general direction, but I wanna hear what else people have to offer. Do the Celestion Golds sound good? Would they work in the Twin? etc, etc.....
If you have insight, I would love to hear it!
Thanks TGP-ers!
