View Full Version : What bands do you consider "heavy"?
jazzandmetal?

In light of the recent thread on less distortion = heavier tone, I am wondering what bands you guys consider "heavy" and why.
Zeppelin:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svR3iXKTJvc
Machine Head:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1H4uISr7JDI
Tool:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hglVqACd1C8
Mastadon:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKw2s_AxUIw
Sepultura:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lzqdamO510
Nile:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gy-HtLCQw_k
A few different versions of what I think is heavy. There are more of course, but couldn't list all of them.
You may not like a lot of what I listed, or think it is noise or not heavy, so put down what you consider to be heavy.
Obviously I am coming from a metal stand point so I am open to other forms of music in this thread.

I think 'heavy' is the worst adjective that's ever been brought into common use describing music. Even more ambiguous than 'tone' and more useless.

I agree that "heavy" is an ambiguous term, and confusingly I think the definition changes over time. I think it basically just refers to anything which sounds extreme and intense, but of course what sounds extreme to one generation sounds like dad-rock to the next. So here's some different flavours of what I consider "heavy":
Proving that you can be heavy with a Rickenbacker in standard tuning, The Mark Of Cain: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7bKez6sdnsg
Proving that you can use something other than a power chord in rock, Helmet: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4Xnktwte0BM
Proving that sheep have a place in rock, The Melvins: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=OmAFJS0K4sU
Proving that Budgie isn't the last word in Welsh rock, Future Of The Left: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xu6wJveSWRU

For the early "heavy" A-440 bands, I'd say the absolute heaviest were:
The Iron Butterfly...
Montrose...
and, of course, Led Zeppelin (as per their name!)
Just about anything using extreme drop-tuning sounds "heavy" - I mean... that's the whole point, isn't it?

A lot of heavy musics are being hit hard on the techno and dubstep dancefloors these days. But I know that's foreign territory for the gear page.
I'm listening to the new DGM Reissue of Fripp & ENO's No poosyfooting, and I think that the new halfspeed remaster of The Heavenly Music Corporation is one of the heaviest things I've heard in a while. Funny. 1973? We're still catching up?
In fact, this whole record is the precurser to a lot of the current droning heavy heads these days, taking it SLOWER to make it 'heavier', whatever that means.

For me, "heavy" is more often a result of the overall groove of the song and therefore is more about the Guitar, Bass, and Drums together rather than the amount of gain. But, I do like my gain where applicable. Here's "heavy" to me:
Clutch - the definition of heavy
Rage Against The Machine
Led Zeppelin
Black Sabbath
Coheed & Cambria
Slipknot
Johnnythunders
11-03-2008, 04:48 PM
Wow Flipper and Sleep! in the same sentence! HA HA HA!
So they went on down
To one of those cheap motels
And they got all gushy and wet
And i say
Ha ha ha ........
Heavy old is of course Sbbath, Hawwind, Motorhead, St Vitus, Eno/Fripp was an interesting choice have to check old my old cassette of that.
Newer heavy is well Heavy Lord, Electric Wizard, Sunn0))) and a ton of other sludge bands.
