Hi folks,

For early stage shielded signal leads, do you guys prefer to use rg58c/u or rg174/u? I like the idea of the 20ga center conductor of the rg58c/u, and the capacitance doesn't appear to be different, both are 50 ohm.

Just curious what you guys use.

Thanks,

Paul

Hey Paul,

I like the rg174. I also get a lot of my wire from http://www.apexjr.com/

Cheers,
Mike

I like the RG174u, but I really like the RG178u.
It's incredibly quiet, and TFE insulated.

Why use Coax at all? These are not high-freq applications.....

And remember that most (not all) RG coax center conductors are steel, and are only copper clad (and sometimes silver plated over that). They're steel so that they'll be strong enough when wired up an antenna mast, but since the design is for hi-freq, "skin effect" is employed, rendering the steel inside "ok".

But for what we do, I'll take "conductivity" over "strength" any day.

As for 50 ohm...doesn't matter in our low-freq application.

For amp use, regular shielded wire is fine. I buy silver-plated, Teflon jacketed from ApexJr.
