I just wanted to get a sampling of gearpagers' favorite chord progressions. At first I thought I should limit the catagory to blues and rock, but I really just want to hear what you guys have to say without limiting your answers. Thanks for your input!

I find myself writing a lot of songs with GMaj - F#min - EMaj (or equivalent) progressions. Which I seem to have stolen from The Black Crowes "Wiser Time", which means I can't use them, which pisses me off.

Something similar to decay's - Emaj7-Ebm7-Dmaj7-Dbm7-all the way down the neck. It just sounds beautiful and you can really color it up. Its also something fun to throw in at open jams...

No problem...I went through a period where I was studying all these crazy chords and this one just got to me. You can do a lot with that one.

If you really want to find some inspiration in chords, grab this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Chord-Progressions-Ted-Greene/dp/0898986982/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1226362679&sr=8-1

Its "modern" chord pros although the book was written in the early 70s so you won't find any references to Nirvana. Haha...I picked it up from a used bookstore for like $3 a few years back and loved it. Every time I'm in a rut I pick it up, turn to a random page, and go at it.

Claptons Layla, the piano part, though I play it on guitar very nice,

C Cmaj/E F9 F Fmaj7 F6 F Bb

though the chords are open and its a simple progression on the fret board.

.......C........Cmaj7/E......F9...F........Fmaj7....F6...... F.........Bb7......................

e----0-------0---------3----1------0--------x-----x-------x------------------
b----1-------0---------1----1------1--------3-----1-------3-----------------
g----0-------0---------2----2------2--------2-----2-------1------------------
d----2-------2---------3----3------3--------3-----3-------3------------------
A----3-------3---------x----x------x--------x------x-------1-----------------
E----x-------0---------1----1------1--------1-----1--------x-----------------

I tend to leave off the Bb7 which resolves the progression to make is continuouse

of course having duane allman playing slide does not hurt either

if you ever work though it, claptons acoustic parts are amazing, really suprised me what he was doing on that song when I did.

Hey thanks guys. It's good to get advise from the pros. I'm gonna get started on these chord progressions, which I'm sure will open many doors. You guys are great!

FWIW, the chord you named "F9" is actually spelled as an "Fadd9."
"9" chords need to have the b7 in the chord spelling. It really is a great progression though!

kinda boring, but I usually default to something like Cadd9 --> some variant of G --> Dadd9

I always liked the intro parts to Wishbone Ash "Blowin Free":

E -7--10---8----7-|-5---8---6----5-|-2---5----3----2-|------0-2-----0-2| Repeat x4
B -8---8---8----8-|-6---6---6----6-|-3---3----3----3-|-3---3---3---3---|
G -7---7---7----7-|-5---5---5----5-|-2---2----2----2-|--0-2-----0-2----|
D ---------------- |---------------- |-----------------|-----------------|
A ---------------- |---------------- |-----------------|-----------------|
E ---------------- |---------------- |-----------------|-----------------|

E -2---0----0----3-|-1-----3-----3----| Repeat x4
B -3---2----1----3-|-1-----3-----3----|
G -2---2----2----0-|-0-----0-----0----|
D ----------2------|-------------------|
A -----------------|-------------------|
E -----------------|-------------------|

Jack Straw or Sugaree by the Grateful Dead. Tasty stuff in there, without getting too crazy.
