I always see his name around here and I watch the youtube clips. Can you guy's recommend an album to start out with. I want to get into this style of playing some, so even other guy's playing in the same style.
I found out that my guitar teacher went to GIT with Scott and was friends and neighbors.

For blues trio get "Tore Down House" and for loose and funky Jazz Fusion get Tribal Tech "Rocket Science"

IMO, Scott has gone through 3 distinct phases in his career, all worth checking out.
The 80s & early nineties Tribal Tech albums were classic fusion characterized by dense, sophisticated compositions and a lot of fast legato, fluid, chops influenced playing. A little Holdsworth at times. Spears, Dr. Hee, Nomad were all great examples.
'90s: Things got more textural and less structured. There was a Weather Report theme emerging. Also darker and more edgy. With Thick & Rocket Science, Tribal Tech abandoned the intricate compositions in favor of coming up with unstructured spontaneous grooves and playing over them.
2000s: Scott stopped playing with his long time band Tribal Tech and started playing what some call Bluesion, or blues/jazz fusion. With Dog Party, he really distilled his playing and shifted over to a much more blues based vocabulary. There are still plenty of advanced harmonic devices going on, but it's less polished and dense. This is also when he really got into his relentless whammy abuse thing. Live is a killer recording.
I own every recording he's done, and I think he was great in all 3 phases. It's really worth checking out all the different eras.
As for other similar artists, check out Jimmy Herring, Rocco Zifarelli & Alex Machasek.
EDIT: This may be a little obvious, and I don't know if you would really call him similar to Scott, but I suppose Mike Landau plays what you could call Blues influenced fusion. The Live albums, Raging Honkies and Burning water albums are all must haves IMO.

I think Henderson's "I Hate You" R & B parody song is hysterical.

Scott's a monster, for sure. I too recommend his Double Live cd. The sound quality, for a live recording is fantastic! I really dig Face First, as well as Illicit. As far as similar styles, and playing go, I would recommend, from this very board, Scott Lerner (New Jersey, not Iowa). He has a great deal of cool stuff like gear reviews, and samples of different amps. and configurations on his website. Not that the SLerner from Iowa can't play well, or isn't a great guy, I just haven't heard his stuff. I would imagine most dudes named Scott play quite well. As well as Steve. Just count in your head how many awesome guitar players you've known named Steve.

nice! LOL
I love Scott's playing - the later stuff more, and S Lerner is a great guy and player!
there's only one player named Winged Eel, so names must be important.
I wonder if more people will visit this fusion thread if we extend that to whether John Mayer is better than John Mclaughlin? ;)

FINALLY.....some scientific thought around here.
so we can hypothetically assume then that James Burton, James McCarty, and James Page are really just sucked into the namesake comet trail of James Marchall Hendrix..."tagging" along for the ride,
and that Jimi effectively scewers the field for the James guitarist....creating a falsely higher badassity median level
...so James guys are therefore not necessarily better than Jeff or Eric guitarists... they're good, Jeffs, Erics and Steves are just better.
:AOK:)

I downloaded from iTunes Dog Party and Tore Down House. I really like them and I love his tone on Tore Down House. What albums show the more jazzier side of Scott?

his stint with the zawinul syndicate was probably an influence at that time...

Anything before Dog Party. Check out the mini-summary in my post above, and Scott's site (http://www.scotthenderson.net/). I'd say Dr Hee, for something a little "happier", Tribal-tech or Illicit for something darker, and Thick or VTT for something groovier.

LMAO! they're HAPPy dancers!
HAPPY JAZZ! :rotflmao
I've heard Scott rant on about his hatred of all things "hot tub happy jazz" a few times at gigs...he's funny but seems pretty bitter too.
checked out your myspace - NICE STUFF! lot of different styles! :AOK

Yup, great playing. I read an interview somewhere where he said he pretty much hated playing with Chick, because everything was so orchestrated and no one had much freedom.
I think he enjoyed in stint with Joe Zawinul more. But Scott really prefers doing his own thing than being a side man I think.
Check out the "Scott answers your questions" of the Scott Henderson Forum (http://www.online-discussion.com/ScottHenderson/viewforum.php?f=3). Scott's responses are pretty amusing sometimes

Yeah, the guy is pretty cynical. Apparently he really doesn't like anything he's ever played in the past.
