Anyone catch Megadeth on HdNet the other night. It's a fairly recent live show from San Diego. I was blown away how great they sounded. Those guys are the real deal. Great playing. I saw them back in '87 however I remember nothing from the show.

They sounded great, the band is tight, Chris Broderick is a machine, as is Lomenzo. Really a solid outing.

Good show but 2 things..the bass was VERY weak in the mix..and I swear Mustaine's vocals weren't live.

I'll have to watch it again. I thought that was the case on one or two songs as well.

There's talk that the TV play is recorded and mixed, not live sound.

What does that mean?
That the audio was remixed after the show, or that they re-recorded it entirely and synced it to the footage?
I'm friends with the Exec Producer of Entertainment at
HDNet and I direct shows like this for a living.
I know for a fact that all of their concerts go through a post-production process where editing of the the video and audio takes place.
The band is responsible for the audio mix, so they can include pitch correction and re-recording of parts int he process if they want.
That's standard practice in the tv biz and has been for years.
You'll never here the true live sound of a band performing on television unless you are watching a live broadcast.
BTW - I watched 20 min of this show and found it very boring. I remember seeing Megadeth on the "Peace Sells..." tour and I thought they were much more energetic and entertaining. Granted it's 20 years later but Dave looked bored and the songs sounded slower than I originally remembered them being.

Chris is a helluva guitarist and a really cool guy. A band I used to be in practiced across the way from Chris' rehearsal space. It is ridiculous how good of a guitarist he is. Glad to see all the hard work pay off for him.

What does that mean?
I was simply trying to suggest the sound wasn't simply a playback of a direct recording.

gotcha.
Like I said, it never is unless you are watching a program that is actually being broadcast as it's happening.
While it is a recording of what they played, it was definitely "sweetened", ie; remixed, mastered and encoded for 5.1 surround before it was broadcast.

I totally understand. I saw them in '85, '86, and '87 or '88, but sadly I remember very little from all three. One of the shows they opened for Motorhead, another they opened for Metallica, and the last one they headlined at the Stone in the SF. The good old days...

I watched a good piece of that.
The vocals were TOTALLY CANNED--as in recorded later and dubbed because the live takes must have sucked.
How can anyone not notice that?
From the first song it was obvious what we were hearing was not what was played and sang that night.
