Joe Bonamassa's version of Spike Driver Blues. Live, the sound was larger than life. He's opening most of the current tour's shows with it. He started the tour with a Stonetree Baritone, but was using a Music Man when he came to Dallas in Sept. He also uses a Theramin on this song's solo...

Pretty sure that was on a 6-string bass, tuned E to E, rather than a bari tuned A to A, B to B or C to C. ISTR reading Carlol Kaye saying she had a Dano 6-string bass that Campbell used to like to use, so maybe that's what he used.
I had an email exchange with Jerry Jones once in which (IIRC) he said that there really was no electric baritone guitar until he started making them. The instruments from the '60s were all tuned E to E, and tended to have intonation problems. He said he started making baritones to provide the flavor of the 6-string bass without the intonation problems. I don't know, but I think a lot of the well-known recordings that people think are baritone are, in fact, 6-string bass.

Holdsworth played baritones a lot in the 90's... on Wardenclyffe Tower, "Sphere of Innocence," "Zarabeth," "Oneiric Moor." On the live release Then! Live in Tokyo - the three "Zone" improvisations. Other examples too, I'm sure.

I love playing Baritone and use a Fender Custom Shop Bajo Sexto, it's a bit more aggressive sounding than the Jerry Jones, Dano's etc...
Not famous tunes but.... I used the Bajo Sexto all over my solo CD and on the two tracks for Dameon Allensworth below. I produced these two country tunes, "The Stone" and "Paint The Cowboy Blue", basic unfinished demos but you can hear the Baritone here:
http://www.myspace.com/dameonallensworth
Several more Baritone tracks here on my Myspace link: http://www.myspace.com/guitaristgregv
"Blossom" demo Baritone thru a fuzztone, more atmospheric, the fuzzed Baritone weaves in and out of the Resonator track.
"Autumn Kiss" Baritone and Lap Steel
"Rusting Soul" Baritone
Check out The Evens, Ian MacKaye plays baritone guitar exclusively. They've put out two records, both of them very good.

I own 5 baritones myself and a EB/MM Silhouette 6 string bass. I was in front of Marshall and pretty close. It looked like a Fender strat with a bari scale length neck.
I also asked several friends about the Glen Campbell "Wichita Lineman" solo. I too have read of both baritone or Fender VI being credited as being used on the track. I've played Dano 6 string short scale basses, tuned both as a bass and baritone tuning with lighter strings. Same with the Fender VI. The sound of that solo to me indicates baritone tuning based on timbre. I could be mistaken.

David Lindley and El Rayo X - the cover of "Your Old Lady" (Sure Looks Good to Me) (Hmm - that might be a 6 string bass, now that I think about it .... anybody?)
That Ricky Martin tune, La Vida Loca? (is that the correct song title?).
Greg V has GREAT baritone guitar on his solo CD. Mark Robinson loaned me his copy like 4 years ago and I still have it in my CD player! I gotta buy my own!
Country is where you'll hear most of it, I'm positive Dwight Yoakum did a few. He sure did - "Little Ways (of Hurtin' Me)" on "Guitars and Cadillacs" is one that comes to mind. Of course, it's Pete Anderson playing it, not Dwight (GRIN).
Thanks, Dana O.

Gotcha. I know he's played the Bass VI on stuff a lot in the past, so that's why I was wondering. Stuff of his own (like "Calling Out For Love At Crying Time") and parts that he played on Freedy Johnston's This Perfect World... are listed as being 6 string bass and are great, great sounding parts.
Me, I only have one "real" baritone - a Danelectron RI from about 2000 or so. However I recently put some heavy strings on a Kent Strat copy and tuned it B to B and that's working pretty well. This was just playing around with it a little:

So when you saw Crenshaw was he capoing much? I've thought that it would be cool to do solo stuff with a baritone and capo it at the 5th fret sometimes, to play the arrangements I'm currently playing on standard guitar, but also capo up and down from there. Or I could just work out new arrangements for baritone. I'm curious how Crenshaw approached it.

Scott,
He did capo for several numbers. I had not seen him play for almost 20 years and was amazed at how good he was. Lots of chord melody within the pop rock framework. Many of the tunes were transposed position wise, in other words, the tunes that were in the key of A on a standard tuned guitar looked like they were in the key of D. They still sounded in A.
Glen Burtnick was with him on bass . Glen plays a right handed bass left handed. Always fun seeing that disconcerting image.
I love playing baritone, but always warn other guitarists not to look at my hands if we are playing together. 3 of mine are A-to-A, one B-to-B, and two are 7 strings bari's, with the 6 core strings tuned B-to-B, one with low F# and one with a high E above the B.

I've had the same experience. A band I played bari in had a pretty deep reperatoire. Sometimes if we played something we hadn't done in a long time (or something we'd never done before) the bassist would look at my hands for cues. I got in the habit of turning away from him when this happened while I was on bari.
On the flip side, when doing things we'd never done before, I had to make a conscious effort not to look at other guitarists while playing bari, especially if distracted by singing, or when Playing Under the Influence.
Last time I saw Crenshaw was probably 13 years ago, now that I think of it.

Nitebob,
I own 3 of the Veillette-Citron Shark baritones, 2 6 strings and 1 12 string. I have the literature Joe and Harvey published at the time and it mentions the instrument was intended for A-A tuning. I have a Veillette 12 string bari that is 27" scale and intended for B-B tuning.

Nitebob,
I also owned one of Black VC baritones. Does yours have 4 knobs? not two?
I found the one I had with a broken truss rod hanging in Manny's music tuned like a 6 string bass! I sold it to a repairman in the early 80's, because I couldn't find anyone to fix it.
V-C only made 14 bari, one of them a 12 string.
Below is pic of 4 of the 5 VC sharks I own - The 2 on the right are bari's. I own another VC bari in a red burgandy color. The two on the left are 25 1/2" scale 6 and 12 strings.
