Go visit him for a long weekend at his Fur Peace Ranch in Ohio. He brings in great talent for instruction, and the place is supposed to be first class.

Oh man, I saw him at the Thanksgiving weekend show at the Palladium (IIRC) in NY in the late 70s/maybe 80 where he didn't sing a word. Turned out that he got dosed before the show and was tripping out. It was very weird, and must have been weirder for him.

Cool guy and a good player. Jorma and Jack in the Airplane, then HFT! Good stuff.

The release of a new Tuna album in the 70's used to cause quite the, uh, "celebration" at our house.

Won't get any argument from me. I saw Hot Tuna a couple of summers ago at Fur Peace. Well worth the 8 hour drive.

I caught Jorma back in the 80's playing solo at a dingy bar here in Toronto and he put on a great show.

He's the only guitarist I ever hitched from Binghamton to Buffalo in a blizzard to catch because the thought of missing the particular show was worse than not hitching there. :)

How many guys can make the seamless transition from acoustic playing Rev Gary Davis to electric and playing Chuck Berry? Very few; one of the greats for over 40 years!

I miss those days!

See my "Jorma and Janis" recent thread?

The last time I caught Papa John was with Zebra, circa '84 in the George Washington University Rathskeller Pub on the 5th floor of the Student Union. My friend Ken and I sat at a small table where a solitary elderly black woman was already seated. We introduced ourselves to her and soon learned it was Papa John's pistol of a missus. She was a live wire, all right. After promptly informing us, "I have to go on tour with Papa these days just to keep him away from the coeds and from snortin' up all of our cash!," she turned to my friend Ken, who has very striking light blond hair and remarked, "My oh my, you sure are a good lookin' white man!" She was so open and charming we soon fell under her spell and had a wonderful evening together at the show. I will always remember both her and Papa John (who joined us during one of the breaks) fondly. :)

Absolutely LOVE that song--one of my fave's to play and sing as well. Interesting to see him playing what appears to be a Martin--I've always considered him such a devoted Gibson guy. Thanks for the clip.

I have enjoyed his work since the sixties - one of my many influences on guitar.

Genesis and Water Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6giiYDlqRQs) are two of the greatest songs ever, to me.

I had a great Jorma moment in '98 when he was playing a tiny club with Hot Tuna, IIRC – after the acoustic set, he plugged his 335 in (to a Carvin BelAir 212) and said with no small amount of certainty, "Now this is a MAN'S guitar."

Great joy in reading so much love for Jorma.

I've spent quite a bit of time with him at his ranch. One of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet. Intelligent, funny, and I'm sure he'd be the first to tell you how he and Jack are lucky to be alive.

When I first met him, I said that Embryonic Journey was the greatest two minute song ever written and he said "1:51". Gotta love that answer!

Imagine...Embryonic came to him in dream. I should have such dreams.

I was with with him at the end of a teaching weekend when a student came in to say thanks and and to say goodbye. She asked if Jorma would please play Genesis and Embryonic for her before she left. And... he did and I will never forget that moment. I remember the shivers and that big smile on my face.

What amazing songs and what an amazing man. :rotflmao

Have recently re-discovered him after nearly 30 years, was suddenly compelled to learn "Watch the North Wind Rise" - had to buy it and get it in to my iTunes immediately.
Love the way he writes too, check out the "thoughts" link on his website.

Another Fur Peace alum here. Much love for Jorma! I really like his Blue Country Heart CD, more country than blues, but he shows how it all fits together. Hot Tuna is coming here in Dec. and Jorma will be back this way on a bill with Robben Ford in Feb.(I think).

In fact, I'm driving eight hours this weekend to see Tuna with GE Smith at the Ranch.
I'll post a couple of photos.

Have loved Jorma and Jack forever.
And have been extremely fortunate to take workshops with both of them at FPR.

I really like his I Know You Rider

Agree. Though love the Dead version too (in D), Jorma's (in A) is almost like a different song. Great stuff.

Used to go quite a bit. Loved the dynamics and feeling.

Is it me or did this album play louder than any other? LOL
