I've never seen him, but his recorded music puts him in very elite territory for current blues guitarists, IMO. Seems like he gets very little mention here, which is suprising.

Trout is a master of volume swells but he crams way too many notes in too short of a space for my taste.

I used to see him in Huntington Beach, Orange County down at Perq's on Main St back in the early 90's - always a great show, his band is brilliant too. I enjoyed the live shows and bought his CD, but have to agree w/ Zombywoof - too many burning licks seems to miss out the feeling and emotion of the blues - I can olny listen to one ot two tracks then I have to move on to another artist. Joe Bonamassa is the same way for me.

I saw him play in a club. I lasted 15 minutes. However the joint was packed to the rafters. He is very talented. Just not the kind of music I like anymore.

I saw him this Summer and thought he put on a GREAT show. He just strikes me as very sincere. He plays a lot of notes, no doubt. But I thought he showed a lot of emotion and was still precise.
And his keyboard guy, Sam Avila, is the happiest man on Earth.

I have seen him a few times. He is tough to catch because he spends most of his time in Europe because his audiences are 5x the size of the US generally. I have had a chance to meet and speak with a couple of times and is a super nice guy. I asked him some technique questions while he was signing a CD, and he was so nice to put everything down that he was doing... walked to the stage to get his guitar and gave me a lesson for a few minutes! What a cool guy.

He does rip it up and sometimes does play too many notes, but I have a hard time putting him down in any way. He lives- truly lives the blues, loves what he does and loves his family... while putting out some great music. Not a bad deal, and he has worked hard to get it.

He's a great rock player who plays the blues. I like him, and he certainly has paid his dues. I guess I'm more of a minimalist is my blues taste. Make every note count just like a great singer does.

His style isn't to everyone's taste and I too have left one of his shows before the end but I have one early record on which I really like what he did - John Mayall's Bluesbreakers Live Behind the Iron Curtain I think it's called. Coco Montoya is also excellent on that.

I had a chance to see him at a free outdoor show here in PA called Musikfest. Had front row seats. Naturally as soon as he came onstage it started to rain. I would have happily sat there and watched because he is killer, but I had the wife along who big surprise is no fan of Walters. So I only got to see a couple songs. I would definitely go see him again in a heartbeat.

He has a song on his latest album "The Outsider" about this very thing.:jo

I tried NOT to like him for years. Another white dude with a strat playing blooze....

But after getting a copy of that album, I like him. A lot.....

Song is called "Child of Another Day"

"Here comes a guy, I met a million times before,
He tells me to slow down, He says remember LESS IS MORE,
He doesn't understand it, it don't sound like it should,
It dont fit his preconceptions, so it can't be any good,
But I just ignore him, I don't care what he says,
He's just a child of another day"

Go on Walter..........play ALL the notes you want to, son......

It doesn't have anything to do with preconceptions of what I expect to hear, it has to do with note/ear fatigue. He's unGodly talented, but after the first three songs I feel like I've heard everything he has to say and he's just shouting at me.

Me too! I grew up in HB and used to catch Walter at Perq's all the time. Good times!

I think WT is great but, that said, once you've one of his solos, you've pretty much heard them all.

hey -- you a GAINESVILLE man, so I like you already......remember Mudcrutch???? :-)

I know what you mean.......but there's plenty of people who LIKE IT too.

I just get sick of so called "blues purists" who think they KNOW what the "truth" of the blues is. NOT SAYING YOU ARE THAT GUY....

but i have spent many years playing the blues, and was given some REALLY good advice from Mr. Buddy Guy himself --

"Bobby, you play blues as good as anybody. But you WHITE, son.....go play that rock and roll and play it like YOU feel it"

Yes sir, Mr. Guy.

My records will never be in the "blues" bin of the record store, because most buyers NEVER go there.....

Walter is one of the truest and most enduring people I have had the pleasure to get to know while on the road....His style is not for my taste but he puts 200% of himself into what he does and that makes him great...

I would love to see him live!! Too many notes is a preference, he obviously does not think there are too many and I believe his opinion counts....

>Playing the blues in Gainesville with: Nash 60s Strat, Gibson 339 Caramel Burst, Orville LP Special Jr., Fuchs 30 head, Super Champ, 2x10 Jenkins with Eminence Legends, VAC 22 2x10 w/Weber Blue Pups<

One of my top five shows was Roy Buchanan in Gainesville at the Great Southern Music Hall around '78. I doubt the venue's still there. Was also the least amount of equipment I've ever seen on stage at a concert.

Also saw AC/DC at "Dubs" in Gainesville in 76 or 77,

Are either venues still around?

Nope. The Dubs building is still around (in fact I think it is for sale). Not sure where the Great Southern Music Hall was located so I don't even know if that building is still around.
