I recently started listening to Mastodon and man these guys are AMAZING guitar players! Very odd and yet very interesting licks.

It's very interesting heavy stuff. ( and I'm not that into really heavy stuff much anymore in my old age.) There is some good live footage on youtube aside from that as well. If you watch it , they do a lot of pretty simple riffs layered and arranged in a vaery interesting way. pretty bad ass stuff.
The ;yrics are laughably ridiculous though . But who cares , they are like DeathKlok Heavy!

I'm not a metalhead, but I *love* Mastodon. The mix of heavy guitars, odd phrasing, complex song structure, and droning vox just do it for me.

Great band, fantastic song. I still can't play that interlude. That riff gets me each time. Fingerpicked I believe - not clear from the video though.

The drummer and guitarist (Bill?) are from Rochester and I've seen them in various bands. I remember over 10-12 years ago seeing the guitarist in a little 3-piece garage band--he couldn't have been more than 18 or 19 and he had a really great sound with the Les Paul through a JCM 800. Punky power chords and Berry/Thunders style leads.
THEN I saw him years later in a band called Lethargy (the Mastodon drummer was in that one too). WOW. He really progressed as a player and now look at him.
MASTODON ROCKS!!!

Brent Hinds plays banjo type licks... I read that he started on banjo so I guess that makes sense.
But another thing I like about them is that they have great tone.

Love Mastodon here... fantastic playing and song composition. Great tones and interesting song structures. Blood Mountain is one of my all time favorite albums, however when I'm in a more metal mood, their earlier releases get the call.
I love the clean-ish vocals they employed on Blood Mountain though, added a hillbilly shaman bent to their music.
If you're a fan of Blood Mountain though, the newest release from Burst, Lazarus Bird, is also a killer progressive album in a similar vein and I'm really enjoying it.
