The new Eric Johnson Live at Anaheim DVD came out today. Anybody watched it yet? I'm still waiting for mine (USPS).

That looks cool! I didn't see that until now. I'll have to pick it up soon.

I've seen it about three times on HDNet.

The version of My Back Pages is way cool, as is Manic Depression.

Looks like a nice venue. You can have dinner and see Eric Johnson and Satriani. It was a sausage party, natch.

They show the Satriani show too. Looks like Eric played first.

I got it yesterday and like it. The new songs are pretty good. Cliffs sounds fantastic with that SG.
I wish that they'd have added the House of Blues show from the Alien Love Child and the entire feature that HC did with him. His rig demonstration would have been worth the price of the dvd alone.
He's as good on piano as he is guitar.
Certainly worth $16 to me.

Keep in mind that he was opening for Satch when it was filmed (regarding length)- I thought it was a good strong set, really. Someone will always be unhappy with something though.

The acoustic stuff was much, much better than I had anticipated - I hope they bring out a whole show of that stuff sometime.

+1 on the HC stuff - they could have included the whole feature, instead of just that interview.

Glad to have the disc though. Funny enough - this was on HD net, right? There is no HD (Blu Ray) of the show, is there...?

Mine arrived yesterday and I like it, though it is on the short side. "On the Way to Love" (yeehaw :) ) and Chris Maresh's "Rocktopus" are breaths of fresh air as they're both new to me.

"Wind Cries Mary" on piano! Pretty cool. I'm glad I got it...

Anyone know the story on the rosewood Strat he was playing?

The Strat is a vintage 1962 Strat.

Got the new Anaheim DVD about a week ago and am really digging it. EJ and band are amazing. Love 'em!

I'm not sure what thread it was, but someone mentioned that EJ had hit his prime during the Musicom era and is not the same anymore. After watching this DVD I have to wonder if it's not his preference these days to play hammer-on/pull offs so often where earlier in his career he would have picked every note.

Any thoughts on this? On the DVD it seemed as if practically 100% of the descending runs weren't picked. Gone are the arpeggios as well for the most part. Part of his fearsome technique, especially right after Venus Isle was released (my idea of EJ's prime) was his damn-near-impossible to replicate picking style, up away from the pickguard. Now it's mostly left hand motion, which brings him down to human status.

Watched it few times myself. Highlights for me:

Plays a '62 strat. Just cool to see him on the rosewood...

Rocktopus - very different type of tune for Eric... written by the bass player - Chris

The SG on "Cliffs" - Smokin'!!! Loved the intro as well. Catch the Beatles "Yesterday" melody?

Piano playing is def a highlight as well.

Also, he seems to have matured over the years in his overall stage persona. Really seemed to be enjoying himself and very in to it!!!
