Me? Ehhhh... Not that good. Too slow. Where's the chorus? The part where they sing together? That part hurt my ears. One or the other should have done the song but not together.. Too forced sounding.
The Chris Cornell one kicks this ones A..

yeah.... jack white is sounding a little too campy and a little too contrived. When i first heard it on the radio i thought "isn't that jack white?" when i heard the stupid POG effects I knew it was.

I think it's killer work, actually. I like almost everything Jack White does...great playing and fuzz tones here...nice drumming as well! Love the 3:32 to 3:45 section...very Bonzo-esque.
Alicia Keys seems to compliment his vocals pretty well for the most part, I must say...especially for a Bond film where you'd think this sort of thing would be common, but interestingly, has never been done before. The only area where she falls flat is during the call and response section. Jack's work there is cool, but Alicia Key's vocals don't quite cut it.
All in all, I think it's a great track. I enjoyed it. :)

BRUTAL. Meandering, tuneless ... You've gotta work pretty hard to get me to NOT watch Alicia Keys (in all honesty, I know nothing about her actual music). I don't like Chris Cornell at all, but I agree his tune was a lot better. -E

I am a Jack White fan but this just feels flat. Not much there to dig into. No real hook.
I'll admit, I'm not a big fan of Alicia Keys. I do think she's super talented and I admire her for that. But for some reason I'm just not a fan.

It's not the quality of a song I would expect for a Bond film. It might grow on me a little, but it just doesn't have anything catchy to it. Chris Cornell's was vastly more in line with the quality I would expect for a Bond film.
The call and response and harmony vocals were weak at times. Maybe it will sound better in the theater with the sound system cranked.

I like the song, but I'm not sure it works as a Bond theme.

The only thing that impressed me in that was the drumming (of course, I'm indifferent to the White Stripes and actively dislike Alicia Keys so there you go). Any chance that was actually Jack White drumming?

He certainly looks like he actually played those drum parts.
Why not use a white grand piano for the video instead of the upright?
Is it just me or are a lot of her yelling parts off key?

I liked it, which is surprising b/c don't really like either of them and I usually need a few listens to warm up to a tune.
I was trying to imagine it over some typical Bond opening footage and I think it would work.
Some folks were really down on "Live and Let Die" as well when it came out. To each his/her own.

Would have liked to hear what Amy Winehouse could have come up with .
Too bad for her and us that she flaked on it (or smoked?).

Easily the best Bond theme since Goldeneye. The biggest downside is that I don't think Jack's guitar tone fits in with the overall production. Not that I dislike his tone, it just could have been done better considering the rest of the mix.
In fact, I think the production in general is lacking. I would have mixed it much differently. It would work a lot better if it were more cohesive. But I like the ideas.

In our Brave New World of autotune, it's probably because Jack's so deliberately retro and she's never had to sing without autotune before...
What got me is that you have to be BRAVE to do a Bond theme. Seriously, how many bands have DIED after doing a Bond theme? Man, it almost killed even Paul McCartney's career! It's a curse, I tell ya.
And that being said, I wasn't impressed. And I love Jack White's music generally. I think he reached too far out of his comfort zone, with the horns and slickness, and it's just not that great a song.
And THAT being said, I've set a sort of songwriting challenge for myself to write the theme for an imaginary Bond film someday...

Terribly Bond theme, although I like a lot of Jack white's output.
Last decent one was Goldeneye.

As usual, to each his own, I guess...
I'm not really that familiar with various Bond themes, but do think this "version" brings a fresh vibe to the "genre", but then again, I do like a lot of what Jack White does, and especially when he does it in a great studio like Blackbird. Perhaps you can criticize this song on several grounds, but the engineering part wouldn't be my first pick.
So for me I guess it's a lot about the sounds, and the playing and, btw, I didn't get the memo saying you need to be in perfect pitch to make good music:D.
Actually it was White himself playing the drums, check out this thread for some insights into the recordings:

The best Bond theme since View to a kill. The Chris Cornell song just sucked. I remember during the opening of Casino royale, when the title song played, I was worreid the movie would suck as much as the song. I really liked the Jack Black theme.
