View Full Version : Which guitarists who are NOT lead vocalists are household names?

Kind of in response to the "Who is the most underrated?" thread and seeing every guitarist listed. By "household names" I mean like my parents might know the name (and neither of them are fans of modern music of any sort):
I think it's a very SHORT list of people:
Eddie Van Halen
Jimmy Page
Keith Richards
Maybe Pete Townsend? But he's done some lead vocalist stuff on his own.

Yeah, it's a very short list indeed. I'm not sure there are too many more that could be considered household names.
Angus Young maybe? I dunno..

Most people don't have no idea who these dudes is.
There's a lesson here methinks: concentrate on the songs and not the wanking because no one cares.
Shocking, I know.

The first person I though of was Carlos Santana. Eddie Van Halen, Keith Ricards and the Edge fit the bill too. Beyond that and, well, your household is alot different than mine :D

Disagree with the entire list above.
Eddie Van Halen
The Edge
Santana
Angus Young

Do you have parents older than 30?
If so, please ask 'em which guitarists they know.
My parents aren't musicians, but they are somewhat informed... My list was based on players my folks (now grandparents) would know.
In other words, your "disagree" comment is not informed.
Also remember than not everyone is in the US.

debatable as a household name...Brian May?
Geez...I barely even know who a few of the guys mentioned were. There's no way they can be household names. When I hear the term household names I think of people like Rush Limbaugh, Madonna, Britney Spears, Brad Pitt, and Oprah type names.
I think most people have heard of B.B. King, Santana, Gene Autry, Jimi Hendrix, and Charo, but that's probably about it. More regular folks probably know the "naked cowboy" guy from Times Square then Jimmy Page or Keith Richards.

Can't have Jerry Reed in the list because he was his own lead singer..."Amos Moses", "When You're Hot You're Hot", "East Bound and Down", "Lord Mr. Ford" for a few hits.

My septugenarian parents know (and like) Chet Atkins 1st and foremost.
They also know of Tony Mottola.
I believe they are also aware that Eric Clapton is a famous guitarist. Of course they both know the Beatles, and that John & George played guitar. (To their credit, they saw them on Ed Sullivan that February evening, and immediately liked them!)
As a kid, my father was a Jazz drummer, and a huge Benny Goodman fan, so he knew who Charlie Christian was.
I believe they know who Wes Montgomery was, although probably from his later pop records.

I'm a guitarist and I'm struggling with a couple of these names! Household names are people that even "non-musicians" would know well.
How about Dave Navarro? He WAS on a hit TV show recently. I think that's a reach though.
Maybe Kevin Eubanks too.
