The last time this happened to me was a few years ago at the Crickets and Their Buddies show in the House of Blues on Sunset Blvd. This was a combination tribute show to the surviving members of the Crickets and release party for the new CD they did of Buddy Holly and the Crickets (and solo) remakes. It featured a lot of the artists who helped out on the CD including J.D. Souther, Johnny Rivers and finally Eric Clapton all playing with the Crickets on their songs. But wait, after Clapton there was one more artist. The show closed with Vince Neil. There had been not a bit of profanity all night and Vince comes out going f*&% this and F*&%’n that. To give him a little credit, the first thing he said was, “How the f*&% am I supposed to follow that?” I guess his contract stipulated that he went on last and Clapton hadn’t been confirmed yet. Still, you have got to recognize who your audience is, and this crowd was not there to see Motley Crue.
So, what brought this up was the release of next year’s Stagecoach Festival lineup. The headliners are Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisey, Reba and ………..Kid Rock. Huh? I don’t think doing a bad cover of a Skynyrd song makes you a country star so what the hell is he doing there? His newer stuff might not horrify the crowd, but when goes into his earlier metl-hop songs he might not make it off the stage without stuff being thrown at him.
What are these people thinking??
